UNITED STATES PATENT EEToE.
IRA M. CONANT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO A. K. YOUNG AND CONANT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKELETON HOOP-SKIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,905, dated February 24, 1874; application fi`ed February 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, IREL M. CoNANT, of the city of Boston, in theV county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skeleton Hoop- Skirts, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an improvement in skeleton hoop-skirts; and consists in making the vertical supporting-straps, extending from the waist downward, of knit fabric, so constructed as to form, at intervals throughout the length of the straps, a series of horizontal and parallel rows of openings or interstices. Through these openings or interstices the horizontal and parallel hoops of the skirt are threaded in and out, in such manner that the openings or interstices through which the hoops pass are wholly or partially occupied by the hoops, thus forming a sure support to prevent the hoops from falling down.
The portions ofthe vertical supportin g-straps which are situated between the rows of openings or interstices through which the hoops pass may be knit closely, or so as to form openwork, and may be wrought into a variety of ornamental designs, while the number of such Ver tical supporting-straps and h orizontal hoops may be determined at pleasure. The hoops `are fastened to the vertical straps, to prevent any sidewise slipping of the hoops through the openings or interstices, by means of metallic clasps or clamps, or sewing or tying with threads or strings, or any of the usual modes of fastening.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawing for illustration.
A A A represent the vertical supportingstraps, so constructed as to form, at intervals throughout the length of the straps, horizontal and parallel rows of openings or interstices. B B B represent the hoops passing through the openings or interstices in the supportingstraps at the points a a a, and fastened at such points to prevent their slipping in the openings.
Vhat s claimed as new and useful is- A skeleton hoop-skirt in which the vertical supporting-straps are of knitfabric, constructed so as to form, at intervals throughout thelength of the straps, a series of horizontal and parallel rows of openings or interstices, through which the hoops are inserted, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth and described. l
