Patented Dec. 18, 1923.
WILLIAM K. PETERS AND ALEX FOSTER, OF FREEMAN, WEST VIRGINIA.
MINER/S KIT.
Application filed February 2, 1922. Serial No. 533,534.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM and ALEX Fosrnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Freeman, in the county of Mercer and Stateof West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Kits; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the ll'lVG'IllQlOlLSHCh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Persons engaged in the mining industry, and more particularly those performing the actual work in the mine, are required to have conveniently at hand such articles as a file for sharpening the tools, squibs for setting off the blasting charges, caps for firing hi h explosives, matches for lighting lamps and for other well known purposes and a scratch for igniting the matches. These several articles cannot be conveniently carried in the pocket without detriment thereto and in the case of the file without injury to the clothing and person. Moreover, the dampness of the mine impairs the efficiency of such articles, hence it is essential that the articles be incased to protect them from dampness and injury, and it is the purpose of the present invention to provide a kit having a separate and independent compartment for each of the articles, with the exception of the match scratch which preferably consists of a roughened plate applied to a side of the kit, the several compartments being designed with especial reference to the special article tobe placed therein and certain compartments being grouped about a centrally disposed or main compartment which is designed to receive the squibs.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figures 1 and 2 are obverse and reverse elevational views, respectively, of a miners kit embodying" the invention,
K, Pnnsnns Figure 3 is a top plan view, and
Figure 4' is a view similar to Figure 3, with the caps of the several compartments omitted.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designatedin the several views of the drawings by like reference characters. The kit comprises a main compartment 1 which iscentrally disposed and which is constructed with especial reference to re'- ceiving the squibs. A cap 2 closes the compartment 1. A fiat compartment 3 is disposed at one side of the compartment 1 and is of such formation as to receive a fiat file, such as generally used by miners for sharpening sundry tools. The compartment 3 is closed by means of a cap 4. A round compartment 5 is disposed at one side of the compartment 1 and is designed to receive firing caps for blasting charges. This compartment 5 is closed by means of a cover or cap 6. A flat compartment 7 is provided at one side of the compartment 1 and is designed to receive a supply of matches and is closed by means of a cap 8. The several compartments 3, 5 and 7 are located at different sides of the compartment 1 and are attached thereto so as to form a part of the kit. The caps of the compartments are slidably connected thereto in such manner as to provide a close fit to exclude dampness from entering the compartments and injuring the contents thereof. A match scratcher 9 is located upon the fourth side of the compartment 1 and preferably consists of a plate which is. roughened to insure ignition of a match when moved thereover with the head in contact therewith.
The kit is constructed so as to be conveniently carried in the pocket and the several compartments are of such size and capacity as to receive an ample supply sufficient for a days work or other period of toil. The various articles are conveniently at hand and are protected from injury or from injuring the clothing or person of the miner.
hat is claimed is:
1. A miners kit of the character and for the purpose specified, comprising a main compartment, other compartments at the sides of the main compartment and attached thereto, the several compartments including movable covers and the said other compartments extending upwardly and outwardly with respect to the main compartments to provide clearance for movement of the covers. 7
2. A miners kit of the character and for the purpose specified, comprising a main compartment, other compartments at the sides of the main compartment and attached thereto, the several compartments including movable covers, and the said other compart 'ments extending upwardly and outwardly with respect to the main compartments to provide clearance for movement of the covers, andsaid covers being at different elevations.
3. A miners kit comprising a main compartment adapted to receive a supply of squibs and of rectangular form in cross seotion, a fiat compartment disposed at one side of and extending upwardly and outwardly from the main compartment and adapted to receive a flat file, armatch receiving compartment disposed upon another side of and extending outwardly and upwardly from the main compartment, and a cap receiving 7 compartment located upon another side of and extending outwardly and upwardly from the main compartment, the several compartments being closed by covers telescopically In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presenceoftwo witnesses.
