SAFETY HOLDER FOR MINE SQUIBS AND DETONATORS.
Application filed February 10, 1922.
To all whom may concern Be it known that l, JOSEPH W. Davis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansted, in the county ofFayette and State ot Vlest 'Tirginia, have invented a 'new and useful Safety Holder for Mine Squibs and Detonators, of which the Afollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to al safety holder for mine squibs and detonators, one of the objects oic the invention being to provide a holder in which explosives of the kind mentioned can be carried safely and in quantities without danger of being permaturely eX- ploded by electric currents in the mines or danger of becoming moist and thus rendered ineliicient and dangerous to handle.
t is the practice among miners generally to carry detonators and squibs loosely in the pocket, they sometimes being Wrapped in paper so as to protect them to a certain eX- tent from moisture. This practice is extremely dangerous, however, because the eX- plosives are readily discharged by electric currents such as found in mines and the eXu plosives are also likely to become moist so as to cause misiring and often serious accidents.
lt is an object of the present invention to provide a holder which Will insulate the eX- plosives therein so that they cannot be eX- ploded by electric currents, the holder also serving to keep moist-ure away from the explosives.
.el further object is to provide a holder in Which a number of squibs and detonators can be placed and/safely carried.
l@Vith the foregoing and other objects in vien7 Which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the corn bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that, Within the scope of What is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment ot the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings the preterred form of the invention has been shown.
ln said drawings Figure l is a plan vieu7 of the holder, the same being shown open.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2, Figure l, the holder being closed.
Serial No. 535,644.
Figure 3 is a section on line 22e-3, F igure 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates the base and 2 designates the lid or cover of the holder. These parts are preferably substantially duplicates et each other, one of them being vprovided near its edges With 'a continuous groove While the other is provided near its edges with a continuous rib l so that When the cover is in position on the base or body the groove 3 will receive the rib 4 and thus seal the holder. Obviously the cover is connected to the holder preferably by hinges as shown at 5.-
Formed Within the bas-e or body l is a longitudinal recess 6 for holding squibs, this recess extending partly across the base from iront to back thereof. In the space between the recess 6 and the front edge of the base is provided a longitudinal series of parallel recesses 7 each designed to hold a detonator. Any number of these recesses may be provided. Correspondingly arranged recesses 8 and 9 are formed in the cover 2 so that when the cover is closed the recess 8 will register with the recess 6 and the recesses 9 will register With the corresponding recesses 7,
The base l and t-he cover 2 are preferably formed of hard rubber or any other suitable insulating material. A spring catch l0 can be secured to the cover 2 and may engage a lug ll on the base so as to hold the cover in closed position.
By providing a holder such as described explosives of the kind mentioned can be handled safely, there being no danger of premature discharge thereof due to contact with charged electric Wires. Furthermore the explosives are protected from moisture.
`What is claimed is ,A holder for squibs and detonators, comprising a base member and a'cover member or" insulating material movably connected,l there being a longitudinal recess and longitudinal series of transverse recesses in each member, the recesses in one -member being adapted to register With the corresponding recesses in the other meniber'vhen said members are closed together, thereby to form a Vlongitudinal squib receiving space and a longitudinal series ci transversely extending detonator receiving spaces, all of said spaces being out of Communication with each other, one of my own, I have hereto affixed my signature lhe members havmg a oont'muous groove 1n the presence of two Witnesses. 1n one face l@hereof adlacenh the edges of theV JOSEPH W. DAVIS. face, and a Contmuous rlb on one face of the l Y 5 other member adapted to be seated Within Wltnesses:
the groove to seal the holder When closed. J. P. WRIGHT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JOHN R. VAWTER.
