To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. Mrnnrxnn, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved paint box of the general character commonly used by artists, and including a plurality of pans or compartments separate compartment for the brushes.

In my improved construction the small paint pans are carried by the top wall of a sheet metal tray which is supported within the box by side walls resting on the bottom of the box. The brush compartment is arranged alongside of the tray and the body of the box is provided with a hinged cover.

The main object ofmy invention is to provide a simple form of brush support which will not'add materially to the cost of the box, which will so position the brush that it will not rattle on moving the box, which will hold the brush so that it may be easily picked up when the box is open, and which will position the tray so that it cannot move laterally in the box.

As one important feature of my construction, the brush support is so positioned that it engages with the brush at a point adjacent to the bristles and the cover cooperates with the support and also prevent endwise' movement of the brush on the support; Thus the bristles are protected in case the box should be carried in the pocket with the bristle end of the brush extending downwardly.

Other objects and advantages will be pointed out hereinafter, or will be apparent from a consideration of the specific constructionsillustrated.

I have illustrated my invention in connection with a paint box including a body portion or box proper having a bottom wall 10 and peripheral walls 11 integral therewith, the upper edge of the rear wall being connected to a cover 12 by a hinge 13. The

paint is carried in a plurality of trays 1% which are preferably formed of sheet metal and are held friction tight in apertures in the top wall 15 of a tray removably sup ported within the box. This tray is formed of sheet metal and the top wall 15 is supported above the bottom of the box by depending peripheral walls 16. The tray is preferably of to the length of the box but is made materially narrower than the-box so as to leave a compartment or chamber 17 for the brush or brushes. I

The box and trays may be made of such width that there may be two of the trays extending lengthwise of the box and spaced apart to leave a brush compartment therebetween, or there may be a single tray with the brush compartment along one side thereof, as shown in the drawing.

As one important feature of my invention I provide a brush support which will not only support the brush and permit it to be easily picked up and keep it from rattling about in the brush compartment, but which will also; serve to hold the tray or trays against lateral movement in the box.

In the 'form of brush support shown in Figs. 1 to 42 inclusive a portion ot one side wall 16 of the tray is bent out to form a partition 18' extending transversely of the compartment 17 and having a terminal flange portion 19 adapted to engage with or rest against the wall 11 of the box. Thus the partition 18 is of a length equal to the width of the brush compartment 17 and holds the tray against lateral movement. The. cover of the box is provided with a plurality of depending ridges or beads 20 extending transversely thereof so as to divide the top wall into a series of shallow pans 21 which may be used for mixing place is held in the notch or recess by the" ridge of the cove-r. It will be noted that as the brush support is formed by one wall of the paint pan carrying tray there-are no additional parts or pieces required, and nothing which can get lost or out of place, and there is nooadditional weight and no material addition to the expense of manufacture.

In some constructions it may be advisable to form the brush support separate from rather than integralwith the wall of the tray. Such a construction is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 in which the brush support is in the form of a sheet metal strip 22 which has one end portion 23 bent to form a spring clamping portion to receive and grip the depending edge 16 of the tray. The 'other end arm be bent to lie against the front wall of the box. The strip may be bent to provide a series of notches or recesses to receive the brush, and the brush support is preferably so positioned as to register with one ofthe depending beads or ridges 20 of the cover. This form of strip may act-resiliently against the front wall of the 'boxaso; as to exert a pressure tending to hold the tray against the opposite side of the box. 1

Having thus described my 'inventionwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r

1. A paint box having a hinged cover, a tray within said box and having a top wall provided with apertures, color pans mounted within said apertures, said tray having depending side walls for supporting said top wall and one of said side walls beingsubstantially parallel to and spaced from'the side walls of the box to form a' brush receiving compartment-,and a brush support extending from said tray wall to said box wall to hold said walls in spaced relationship, said support having a recess in the upper side thereof to receive a brush and said box cover having a depending ridge extending transversely of the upper surface and spaced from the end of the box to register with the brush supportand retain being bent to extend the brush in said recess when the cover is closed. 7 V I 2. A paint box having a color carrying tray therein presenting a side well substantially parallel to, and spaced from a side wall of the box to form a brush receiving compartment, and a brush support extending frornsaid tray wall tosaid box wall at a point spaced from the end ofthe box, said support having a recess in the upper side thereof to receive a brush, and a box cover having a portion adapted to register with the brush support and retain the brush in said recess when the cover is closed;
