EMANUAL TAYLOR.
Application filed March 3, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mourns VVEINs'rEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mens Garters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw mg.
My invention relates to improvements in mens garters.
An object of my invention is to provide a garter in which the strain or pull thereon of the stocking supported thereby is so distributed as to avoid having the strain carried by a single or particular part of the garter and the consequent faster wear thereof than of the remaining parts forming the garter; by so distributing the strain longer durability of the garter is secured.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garter peculiarly adaptable for use with stockings of different length.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garter having means whereby an extra long stocking or a heavy stocking may be fastened thereto without folding or bunching with the consequent discomfort to the wearer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garter which will retain its shape and lie flat upon the leg of the wearer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garter which, owing to some features of its construction, eliminates the necessity of measuring of material with consequent increased speed and lessened cost of production.
invention further includes all of the other various novel objects and features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified and described.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a view of the garter with the parts in engagement; Fig. 2 is a view of the garter with the parts disengaged, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals designate the same parts in the different figures.
In the garter an elastic Webbing or band 1 is secured by stitching at one end 2 to the pad 3, the other end 4 passing through a sliding buckle 5 and a slot of the fastening device 6 and then folded upon itself and at- MAN S GAR-TEE.
Serial No. 540,669.
tached to the sliding buckle 5 in any suitable manner.
The pad 3 is formed of two similarly shaped pieces, 7 and 8, of a suitable fabric centrally disposed between which is an end 9 of the pendant 10, which is preferably made of an inelastic fabric. A grip 11 for the stocking is secured to the end 9 of the pendant which passes therethrough and is folded upon itself as shown at 12. After the end 9 with the grip 11 attached thereto has been placed between the pieces 7 and 8, the pieces 7 and 8 and the end 9 are stitched together as at 18. A stud 16 preferably of metal is secured to the pad 3 by stitching 15, the stitching passing tirough the layer 7, the end 9 of the pendant and the layer 8 and also. in. the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, through the end 2 of the elastic webbing 1. It will thus be seen that the end 9 of the pendant 10 is very firmly secured to the pad at the upper and lower ends thereof and also intermediate the ends by stitching. The free end 16 of the pendant 10, preferably made integral therewith, carries a stud 17 preferably provided with a rubber sleeve and after the top part of the stocking has been drawn over the stud it is inserted in the grip 11 and pulled down into the narrow slot of the grip where it is retained until withdrawn.
The downward pull or strain of the stocking being primarily on thependant 10, it will be seen by my construction that this pull or strain is communicated to the pad 3 throughout its length with a resultant equally distributed strain on the elastic band. In garters heretofore made of thisgeneral type the pendant or tab is attached by stitching to the lower end only of the pad with the result that there is not an equal distribution of the strain on the elastic band, most of the strain being exerted upon that portion of the band directly adjacent the lower end of the pad whereby said portion becomes worn out more uickly than the rest of the garter and requiring the garter to be discarded; by the equal distribution of the strain in my improved garter as hereinbefore described not only is its original shape retained whereby it lies flat thus affording greater comfort to the wearer but a longer durability is secured.
In prior garters wherein the pendant is attached by stitching to the lower end only of the pad, it occurs more or less frequently, owing to the carelessness of employees in the manufacture, that the pendant is inade qnately stitched to the pad because the pendant is not properly positioned during the stitching operation; this possibility of defective manufacture is avoided in my improved garter inasmuch as the pendant extends through the pad and is stitched there to at each end and is also secured to the pad by the stitching attaching the stud thereto.
It will also be seen that the length of the pendant in my improved garter does not have to be of exact measurement inasmuch as while the free end of the pendant must be of suflicient length so that the stud carried thereby shall engage the stocking grip, if it is of greater length the usefulness of the garter is not impaired as the excess length may extend beyond the top of the pad without disadvantage. This avoiding of exact measuring saves the time of the employee and thus increases speed of production.
In my improved garter, the top of the stocking may, if desired, be positioned rearwardly of the pad and to the top thereof or to the extent permitted by the free end of the pendant if the loopformed thereby extends beyond the top of the pendant; this adaptability of my garter makes avoidable the otherwise required folding or bunching of the tops of extra long stockings and also permits my garter to be used with heavy or thick stockings.
While I have herein described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not thereby desire or intend to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrange ment of parts as the same may be modified and varied in minor particulars from those shown in the drawings and herein described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my, invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the Unit-ed Statesi 1. A garter comprising a pad having a stud stitched to the pad, a band stitched to one end of the pad and having a vfastening device on the other end adapted to engage said stud, a pendant extending longitudinally within said pad and retained therein by stitching at the ends of said pad and by thestitching of the stud, the latter stitching securing the stud, the pad and the pendant together, a stocking grip secured to said pendant, a flexible member connected at one end to said pad, and a stud carried by the free end of said member to engage said grip.
2. In a garter, the combination of a leg band, a pad connected to one end thereof, 00- ope'rating disengageabie fastening elements secured to the pad and to the free end of the leg band, cooperating stockingclaspelements in supported relationship with the pad, and a reinforcing strip of flexible material ex tending from top to bottom of the pad and firmly secured thereto, said reinforcing strip cooperating with the pad in forming a base to which one fastening element is secured.
3. In a garter, the combination of a leg band, a pad connected to one end thereof, cooperating disei'igageabie fastening elements secured to the pad and to the free end of the leg band, cooperating stocking-clasp-elements in supported relationship with the pad, and a reinforcing strip of flexible ma terial extending from top to bottom of the pad and cooperating with the pad in forming a base to which one fastening element is secured and also forming securing means for one of the stocking clasp-elements.
4. In a garter, the combination of a leg band, a pad connected to one end thereof, cooperating disengageable fastening elements secured to the pad and to the free end of the leg band, cooperating stockingclasp-elements in supported relationship with the pad, and a reinforcing strip of flexible material extending from top to bottom of the pad and firmly secured thereto, said reinforcing strip cooperatingwith the pad in forming a base to which one fastening element is secured, and having a free swinging extension from the top of the pad to a clasp element,
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 28 day of February, A. D.
