Description

A. L. WHITNEY.
Sash-Holders.
No.147,72v6, Patentedreb.17,1a74.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS L. VIIITXEY, OF HAR TARD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,726, dated Februaiy17,1874; application filed January 28, 1874.
To all whom `t ymuy concern:
Be it known that I, AUG-Usros L. Winn NEY, ot' Harvard, in the county of Middlesex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Sash-Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which aceompan y and form part ot' this specification, is a description ot my invention sutiicient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
The invention relates to the construction of a device for supporting a wiinlowsash'by fric` tional pressure., instead ot' by countcrbalanceweights.
In lny invention I use a lon g metal case set into a slot cut for its reception in the side bar ot' the sash, and in this case I place a frame, in which is journaled a friction-roll, this frame sliding between. guideways formed in the case, and being pressed forward by the stress ot' a strong sprine. W hen the case is secured in the sash slot or inortise, and the sash is placed in the window frame, the roll or frame is pressed back and held by the window-frame against the stress ot' the spring, but the springpressure is such that, although the roll turns freely for the sash to be raised or lowered by pressure ot' the hand, yet it holds the sash tirnily in any position when t'ree from such pressure.
Myinvention consists in the sash-retaining device constructed as thus generally described.
The drawing,` represents a construction enr bodying` my invention.
'Fig'. 2 is a sectional elevation of it.
Figure l shows the same in front view. Fig. 3 is a central cross-section. Fig. 4 shows the roll in position to support the sash. a denotes the 111et-alca-se,to be set in a lnortise formed to receive it in the edge ot' the vertical rail ot the sash. This ease has a deep socket, and at the central part the case is formed with guide-ribs b, between which plays a frame, c, that carries the presser-roll d, the roller turning on a pin, c, exteiiding through the frame. Back of the franic c is a spring, f, which bears against the t'raine and tends to project the outer side ot' the roller beyond the case. This spring may be a lez'ttspring, as seen in the drawing, or a spring; ot" any other suitable form or construction. The roll is held back when the sash is in place, but is at all times pressed forward by the spring, and with sufficient stress to maintain the sash in any position, to Vwhich it may be raised.
I claim- The sash-supporter having a r'oll journaled in a frame, c, which frame slides between guides b in a case, a., and is pressed forward by the stress of a spring, all substantially as shown and described. n
AUGUSTUS L. `WHITNEY.
