L. HOPKINS, OF ROSLYN, NEW- YORK, ASSIGNOR '10 AMERICAN LITHO- GRAPHIC COMPANY, OF NEW YORKJN. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DISPLAY nnvrcE.
To all whom it myconcem:
Be it known that I, WILLIA L, HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roslyn inthe county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification. "I
This invention relates to display ,devices such as are adapted .for use vin connection .with containers, particularly bottles, and has as an object to provide a unitary device having means integral therewith for attachment and support directly upon the container.
Another object is to provide such devices in forms adapted for use as advertising mediums, to bear data relative to the contents of the containers and other analogous"objects to which they are attached; further object is to provide display devices in designs inexpensive to construct and which are readily erected on a bottle or removed at will.
To these purposes my improvements comprise features hereinafter described. in their preferred embodiment and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which F'gure 1 is a perspective front view of a 3!) conventional type of bottle, showing the application of the preferred embodiment of my invention. a Fig. 2 is a plan viewshowing the flat blank prior to bending. Fig. 3 is a similar but fragmentary view showing a modification in comtruction.- .All of the figuresare to one scale. r
The shape of the display device is imma; terial, so far as the out preferred pro file its side edges 11 terminatmg at points uadistant from the upper edge 12 and being joined by converging curves 13 blending into a connectingcurve 1% preferably ovoidal or semi-elliptic in 5: shape, these curved edges outlining a tabopening 22, maintaining the device in opopen at the bottom, as shown.
me of itsupper portion or body is concerned, and also the ma- 49 .terial, except that it be flat, flexible and ApPlicationtled-March 7, 1922. sem No. 541,798.
like element 15. in some cases there is provided bending crease 16, extending vacross tab 15, approximatel. at the junction of curves 13 and 14 an parallel with upper edge 12. An opening 17, preferably oval in form, is provided through tab 15, 1ts major diameter beingon the vertical median line of the blank and its upper edge adjacentcrease16. A substantially U shaped incision 19, having out-turned ends 20, is made in body '10 on said median line, forming lip 21, above oval opening 17, said lip whenv pressed outwardly presenting an opening '22. When erected on a bottle or the like,
oval opening 17 is passed over bottle neck-7,- becoming seated on the lower portion-thereof and the blank vert'ically flexed throughout its width so that stoppered mouth 8 and the, upper part of neck 7 extend through erative position.
Lip 21 is adapted to press against said neck materially augmenting the gripping fuction of the openings but rmitting the device to be rotated on neck 7 and applied or removed with case. In the modification indicated in Fig. 3, the same general characteristics are maintained, exce t that in place of a continuous curved e ge .at' the bottom of tab 15, the material is cut away presenting opposed prongs 23 at the sides 1 of oval opening 17 which is now artially his arrangement, while holding the display device with equal security to the bottle, ad-' mits of more convenient assembling, particularly if the bottle necks are irregular or var .in 'slze.
' rom the foregoing it will be seen that a neat appearing and effective display device hasbeen devised, capable of extensive use and which, due a to, its simplicity, can be made at a moderate cost.
1 1. In 'a displa device of sheet material adapted for erection on a/bottle or the like, the combination of a body having a U shaped cut therethrough whereby an opening and a lip are provided, said opening being adapted for receiv'in the neck of the bottle therethrough an said lip. adapted for pressing against said neck, and a second openlng belowsaid U shaped opening adapted for engagin the lower .portion of the bottle neck, said splay being adapted to be flexed when 110 erected on the bottle, whereby said openings are brought into engaging relation with the bottle.
2. In a display dev ice of sheet material adapted for erection on a bottle or the like, the combination of a body having a U shaped cut therethrough whereby an opening and a lip are provided, said opening being adapted for receivin the neck of the bottle therethrough an said lip adapted for pressing against said neck, and a second 0 ning of oval contour below said U shape ada ted for engaging the lower portionof the ottle neck, said display being'adapted to be flexed when erected on the bottlewhereby, Said openings are brought into engaging relation with the bottle.
3. In a display device of sheet material adapted for erection on a bottle or the like, the combination of a body having a U shaped cut therethrough whereby an opening and a lip are provided, said opening being adapted for receivin the neck of the bottle therethrough an said lip adapted for pressing against said neck, a second 0 ening below said U shaped opening adapte for opening engaging the lower portion of the bottle neck, and a transverse folding line between said openings, said display being adapted for bending along said folding line when erected on the bottle, whereby said openings are brought into engaging relation with the bottle.
4. In a display device of sheet material adapted for erection on a bottle or the like, the combination of a body having a U shaped cut therethrough whereby an opening and a lip are provided, said opening being adapted for receiving the neck of the bottle therethrough and said lip adapted for pressing against said neck, a second opening of oval contour below said U shaped opening adapted for engaging the lower portion of the bottle neck, and a transverse folding line between said openings, said display being adapted for bending along said folding line when erected on the bottle, whereby said opening and holding means are brought into engaging relation with the bottle.
In witness whereof, I hereby aflix my signature this 4th day of March, 1922.
WILLIAM L HOPKINS.
