PALMER, KENNEDY, OF TACOMA, VIASHINGTON.
CUTTING DEVICE.`
vApplication led January 15, 1921. Serial No. 437,435.
T all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PALMER KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Devices, of which the following .is a specification.
My said invention relates to an improved holder for Vsafety razor blades and it 1s in-l tended to be used as a ripping vdevice by seamstresses and for other purposes that will suggest themselves to the user.
The main object of myinvention is to provide a device of the class described which shallbe simple and` which may be produced in a very economical manner.
A' further object of my invention is to providefa device of the character described in which-'the blade may be very -readily removed and replaced.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similarparts, l
Figure 1 is a plan of one form of my invention,
Figure 2, a section on line 2-2, Figure 3, a. modied form, and Figure 4 is a section on lineV /1-4 ure 3. v I f Figure is a further modification, and Figure 6 a section on line 6-6 thereof.
Figures 7 to 12 show additional modifications.
In Figure a handle portion 14C' and al blade 15 herein shown kas being of the Gillette type but which may be of any type so formed as to be conveniently retained in place by the holding devices on the handle 14C. In Figure 1 these holding devices comprise a flap 16 punched out from the forward end of the device leaving a portion 17 underneath the Hap on which the same may rest. Preferably the flap 16 has projections 18 formed in the stamping operation which may be bent downwardly to engage the opening or openings in the blade to prevent accidental removal thereof. The flap is beveled underneath its lower edge to enable the user to insert a fingernail or the like under the flap to lift the same, as shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 3 the portion 17 underneath the blade 15 is continuous with the handle and the flap 16 is bent over to enclose and of Fig- 1 I have shown a device having form a guard for the upper edge of the blade. rlhe portion underneath vthe bladek has punched up lugs 19 for engaging the opening `or openings in the blade and the blade is held in place by the lugs and by the pressure of the resilient'flap 167'. At its rearl end the flap has a projection 2O which forms a thumb piece whereby theuser may lift the iap so that the blade may. be readily'ref moved.
In the modification of Figure A5 the fiap 16 is formed, as inFigure 3, by an integral continuation ofthe back 17 and is cut away to vleave a triangular portion, the eX- treme end of which extendsdown to the center hole inthe blade. It may, if desired, paye a tang 18 extending `down into the io e.
The modification of Figure7 shows a holder flat throughout its entire extent and provided with a pair ofstamped lugs 1 9.
Cooperating with these lugslfor holding the blade is a screw 21 passing through the blade and into a threaded orifice in the holder. If desired the screw may pass through the holder and be held in place by ainut, instead oftaking the form shown. r
In Figure 8 is shown a-modification' similar to, that of Figure 7, except thattwo holes are formed vinthe holderin place of the lugs and a pair of screws 21'` are inserted therein.
The screws may-be threaded into Athe holder. as .in Figure 7, instead of beinggprovided with nuts, if desired. It will be understood that the holes or screw threaded apertures in they handle are preferably provided yat such-a distance aparty that if a blade such as the Durham Duplex type is used theholes will fall at the ends of the openings in the blade so that the blade will be. held against endwise movement. j
Figure 9 shows a device similar to Figure 8, a pair of paper clips of a well-known type being substituted for the screws. These clips are merely inserted from the underside and have their legs spread apart and bent overto hold the blade in place. y
Figure 10 shows a further modificationin which the end of the holder is lbent over at 23 and a part 24 is also stamped out of the holder and bent over to engage the blade or to project into the opening thereof as desired. The part 23 may also bear yieldingly n Y shown and described.
In Figure 1l I have provided a holder with lugs 19 and turn-buttons 25 co-acting therewith to hold the blade in place.
Figure 12 shows a device in which the stamped out lugs are carried farther up than in other forms, somewhat as in the wellknown glove fastener. Cooperating with these lugs to hold the blade in place is a slip of metal 26 having openings 27 surrounded by resilient tongues which snap over the lugs 19, the slip 26 then resting closely against the blade.
Many modifications of my device will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and I do not limit myself to what is herein For example, in the device shown in Figure l2 I may provide a single central lug with a snap holder therefor and one or more lugs engaging the blade to prevent rotation of `,the blade. IV
may also provide in any such device as those shown in Figures '7 to l2, a curved guard such as 16 of Figure 5 which may, if desired, extend only far enough over to c.om pletely cover and' pro-tect the edge of the blade. It will be seen that the devices shown in the drawing are merely illustrative, the true scopeI of the invention being defined' by the appendedr claims. Y
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Iietters'Patent, is: f
l. Ina cutting device a two-edged safety razor blade and a one-piece holder thereforl having a'handle and lalso having a punchedout portion approximately equal in length to the blade, said portion extendinglover the blade to hold the same in place and having lugs at its free 'end extending into holes in the blade to prevent rotation thereof,
substantially as set forth.
2. In a cutting device, a safetyrazor blade and a holder therefor having a handle and also having a laterally extending punchedout portion extending over the blade to hold the same in place, and providing a guard for one edge of the blade, said portion being beveled underneath its lower edge, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cutting device, a safety razor blade and a handle therefor having a punched-out portion extending over the blade to hold the same in place, said punched out portion having` one or more projections at its forward end extending transversely into corresponding openings inthe blade to prevent accidental removal thereof, substantially as set forth.
t. A cutting instrument comprising a twoedged safety razor blade and -a holder therefor having a face-against which the blade may rest, a resilient portion 'punched out from the said face engaging the opposite face of the blade to hold it in place and forming a guard for one edge of the blade, and one or more lugs on the resilient portion to engage corresponding holes in 'theblade to prevent displacement thereof, substantially as set forth. f v
5. A cutting instrument comprising a twoedged safety razor blade and a holder hav-` ing a handle said holder having a face against which the vblade may rest-,the side edges of the holder and handle being parallel to the cutting edges of the blade, a resilient extension engaging the opposite'face of the blade and forming a guard for one edge of the blade, the other edge vof theblade overhanging the adjacent edge ofthe holder and one or more lugs on the .extension tov engage corresponding holes in the blade and preventV displacement thereof, substantially as set forth.
6. A oneepiece holder for a two-edged t F. W. DAHN, M. A. SHAW.
