To all whom it may concer/n.:

Be it known that I, Mo'rr G. GILLE'rrE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to :improvements in safety razors.

It is an object of the invention to provide a safety razor which is so constructed that when the same is not in use the blade may be drawn into a position where its cutting edge is not exposed, thereby eliminating the danger of one accidentally inflicting wounds with a razor by the mere handling thereof.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a razor of this character wherein the edges of the blade may be rapidly released from their confined or protected position so as to expose the cutting edges for use.

In the drawings Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section.

Figure 2 is a similar view with parts in elevation.

Figure 3 is a plan of the guard.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the numeral 1 designates the back of a safety razor which is preferably of a concave formation similar to the well known Gillette razor. This back carries blade engaging prongs 2 and a central threaded post 3 to which there is adjustably attached by means of complemental threads the handle 4. A guard 5 is provided, the same having apertures 6 adapted to receive the pins 2 and a central aperture receiving the post 3, said guard serving to cover the usual double edged blade 7.

In Figure 1 I have shown the guard as having an elongated slot 8 along each side rovided with intermediate partitions 9.

hese partitions 9 and the sides of the guard are formed with cutout notches or pockets 10 therein having one wall thereof inclined as disclosed by the character 11 while the other wall is substantially straight as shown by the reference character 12. The notches in the various partitions are of the same construction and a description of one will suffice for all. As shown in Figure 1 these notches are of a substantial depth, and when the handle is adjusted to draw the guard down on the backing the cutting edges of the interposed blade are thrown up into these various pockets and protected by the straight walls 12 thereof. When in this position the blade edges are so far withdrawn from the edge of the backing 1 that the cutting edges are not exposed so that the accidental cutting is prevented and `furthermore the edges of the blade arel protected against injury by coming in contact with foreign obstacles.

When the razor is to be used, and it is desired to expose the cutting edges the handle 4. is turned to separate the guard from the backing whereupon the flexible blade is permitted to so flex, and the straightening of the blade projects the cutting edges forwardly, these cutting edges coming out from behind the straight walls of the notches and slightly overlying or projecting beyond said notches as shown in Figure 2, which figure represents the blade ina cutting position. The adjustment of the handle, of course, determines the position of the blade and in this manner the blade can be adjusted for satisfactorily operating upon a stift' or flexible beard and the closeness of the shave is likewise under control. Obviously after the use of the razor the blade is again thrown intothe protecting pockets by the tightening of the handle and in this wav the cutting edge is preserved for indefinite periods of time.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: i

1. In a razor. the combination with a backing. a flexible blade carried thereby, a guard for the blade, said guard being formed with undercut recesses adjacent the cutting edges of the blade a handle for flexing said blade` said handle being adjustable and when moved in one direction being adapted to flex the cutting edges of the blade into said undercut recesses to protect said cutting edges said blade being adapted to be released from said recesses upon a different adjustment of said handle to permit its cutting edges to be exposed.

2.l In a safety razor, the'combination with l a backing, a flexible blade thereon. a guard overlying said blade, said guard being formed with undercut notches therein adjacent the cutting edges of the blade. an adjustable handle adapted when moved in one direction to flex said cutting edges into said notches to protect the same and when moved in an opposite direction .to permit said edges to spring to a cutting position.

3. 1n a safety razor, the combnation with a backing, a lexible blade adapted to be supported thereon, a guard overlying said blade and of a width substantially greater than the width of the backing, said guard along each side thereof being-provided with shoulders extending downwardly toward the backing, an adjustable handle connected with said backing and adapted when moved in one direction to flex the cutting edges of the blade within spaces formed in said guard by said shoulders to cause said cutting edges to lie within the confines of the lower walls of said shoulders to protect the same7 said handle when moved in an opposite direction permitting said blade edges to spring outwardly beyond the confines of said shoulders for the .purpose described.

4:. In a safety'razor, the combination with a backing, a flexible blade adapted to be supported thereon, a. guardoverlying said blade and of a width substantially greater than the width of the backing, said guard along each side thereof being provided with shoulders extending downwardly'toward the backing, an adjustable handle connected with said backing and adapted when moved in one direction to flex the cutting edges of the blade within spaces formed in said guard by said shoulders to cause Said cutting edges to lie within the connes of the lower walls of said shoulders to protect the same, said handle when moved in an opposite direction permitting said blade edges to spring outwardly beyond the confines of said shoulders, said guard also being provided with longitudinal openings extending therethrough adjacent vthe sides of the guard through which lather may pass. y
