To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY ADALBER'I S'MI'rI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Rippers and Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in safety ripping devices and has for its object the production of a device in which a sharp blade such as a razor blade may be employed and protected for use as a ripper.

A further object is the production of a device in which all cutting portions of the device are protected when the device is not in use.

A further object is the production of a simple, inexpensive device that can be readily assembled and cheaply manufactured.

These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by my device, an embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device covered in its case; Fig. 2 represents a plan view of my device in operative position; Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the supporting holder open; Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the covering shield member open; Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the cutting member.

Like numerals represent like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring now to the drawings, the device comprises a cutting member 6 shown in Fig. 5 as a razor blade of the ordinary Gillette type having end openings 7 7 and a central opening 8.

A supporting holder 9 preferably made of leather, card board or even flexible metal is formed of asubstantially rectangular shape with portions of each side cut away as indicated at 10, and also provided with complementary fastening devices 11 and 11 These fastening devices are of the ordinary glove fastening type in which an enlarged head 12 is adapted to enter and lit within a socket 13. The covering member or shield 14 is preferably made of the same material as the supporting member and substantially star shaped, having projecting fiaps 15, 15*, also provided with fastening members 11, 11*, corresponding to those in the supporting member.

It will be noted that the position of the flaps 15 correspond to the cut-away portions of the pocket 10' inthe supporting member 9. When the device is in operative position as indicated in Fig. 2 the supporting member is folded along the line 16 and the fastening members pass through the opening 7, 7 and secure it in place, leaving the central opening 8 exposed. and leaving exposed one of the cutting surfaces 17.

After the device has been used to such an extent as to dull the edge 17, the cutting member 6 may be reversed bringing the cutting edge 17 in operative position. When 'the device is not in use or when it is to be laid aside the shield or covering member 14 is folded along the line 18 and the fastening members 11, 11 in the flaps snap together through a central opening 8, thus completely protecting the operating cutting edge as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be noted that the supporting member and protecting flap are sufiiciently large so that when the device is in operative position and also when it is closed neither of the cutting edges touch the surface of the supporting member or the shield, as indicated clearly in dotted line in Fig. 1.

When the device is put away or is out of use, it may be slipped in any convenient case or holding device, a special holding device therefor being made the subject of a design patent filed simultaneously herewith.

My device is of special value to housewives and dressmakers, who require some handy and sharp cutting edge for the purpose of ripping seams or cutting of any character. The device will be of especial use also to tailors, as well as cleaners and dyers in ripping apart articles preliminary to dyeing.

While I have illustrated an ordinary safety razor blade as adapted for this use, it is understood that I may use other cutting devices provided means are supplied for supporting the same within the case and protecting the cutting edges. I find leather to be the best material from which to make the device, but, as above stated, almost any flexible material may be used to advantage.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p

1. A device of the class described, comprising a two edged cutting bladehaving a plurality of openings therein, a flexible holding member secured to said blade provided with a plurality of complementary fastening members adapted to engage with each other through said opening, said holding member being so positioned with respect to the cutting edge as to be out of engagement therewith, a flexible folded shield to engage with each other through an opening in said blade.
