i SLIDE-RAIL CLAMP. j
Application filed July 3, 1923. Serial No. 649,285.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that we, J AMES W. BANDRIDGE and GEORGE HANCE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Garrison, in
may be temporarily extended, it is the pur-k pose of the present invention to provide a means of which the adjustable vor extension rail may be securely held in place. With this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts ofv 2o the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure l is a perspective view showing the temporary track extension with the improved clamp applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a transverse vert-ical sectional view taken just in front of one of the clamps.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clamp.
Figure 4 is a central vertical sectional view of the clamp.
It is customary to employ extension rails l of the same section as the permanent rails 2 but the extension rails are disposed on the inside of the permanent rails with the treads against the webs of the permanent rails so that the base flanges 3 are in substantially perpendicular planes or parallel to the webs of the permanent rails, the webs of the extension rails constituting the treads when the cars are run on to the extension rails. l
Since the extension rails arc merely temporary eXpedients it is essential that they shall be readily extended or removed when desired and yet held substantially in place when in use and the clamps shown in the present invention are designed to accomplish this purpose. There may be one or more clamps used on each extension rail as desired and each clamp consists o f an integral member A. and a loose member B of which new, simple and efficient form of clamp by` which a preferred embodiment is shown in 1 the former comprises a body portion 4 adapted to lie in contact with the base flange of the permanent rail 2, the base member terminatmg in a hook element 5 embracing the outer edge of the base flange ofthe rail 2 and a ange element 6 disposed behind the base flange of the extension lor adjustable rail l, the ange 6 carrying an adjustment screw 7 which may be provided either with a head constituting a wrench seat or with a head adapted for turning itV by hand, as practice may dictate. The adjustment screw 7 is brought into clamping engagement with the bottom of the base flange 3 of the extension rail 1 and in order that the latter may not tilt upwardly, as is possible under the conditions where it receives the pressure of a screw, the loose member is provided. This consists of a member similar to .the member A but since `lit is subjected principally to tensile strain it is not so stout as the latter member consisting of a preferably flat piece of metal formed with a lreturned bend S constituting a hook engaging the upper edge of the base flange 3, the, body portion 9` being formed with an eye through which the clamping screw 7 may pass. When the device is secured to the permanent rail and to the extension rail, the flanges of both are firmly engaged and both rails are held securely in place-and yet a loosening ofthe adjustment screw on one` or as many of the clamps as are used, will release both clamps from the rails and permit the ready adjustment of the eXtension rail or its removal, if desired.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with the permanent and extension rails of a mine track, of al clamp consisting of fixed and loose members of which the former is provided with a hooked end for engaging the base of the permanent rail and the latter with a hooked end for engagement with the base of the adjustable rail, and a common clamping means for securing both elements in position. A
2. The combination with the permanent and extension rails of a mine track, of a Y clamp consisting of fixed and loose members of which the former is provided with a hooked end for engaging the base of the permanent rail and the latter with a hooked;
end for engagement with the base of the adjustable rail, the xed member being provided with a-l flange paralleling the base flange of the adjustable rail, and an adjusting screw passing ktluough Said flange-and abutting the flange of the adjustable rail.
and loosely engaging the said loose member. 10
