Description
UNTTED STATES PATENT QEEIcE.
DANIEL LANDES, or SEMPEoNrUs, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,658, dated February i7, '1874; application filed November 29, 1873. Y
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL LANDES, of Sempronius, in the county of Austin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Power for Cotton-Gills, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a horse-power for running cotton-gins and other machinery, whereby the power is applied directly to the circumference of the big Wheel which moves the machinery, instead of to the center shaft.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my improved horsepower.
A represents the main or center shaft, upon which is attached the wheel for running the machinery. This wheel is composed of a series of horizontal arms, B B, secured to and radiating from the shaft A. To the outer ends of the arms B B is secured the rim C, and each arm is braced by meansof a brace, D, extending downward and attached to the center shaft A; G G represent four levers, the inner ends of which are laid" across each other to form a square frame, as shown in Fig. 2, and this frame is suspended from and below the rim C by means of four rods, a a, which pass through the rim and through the four corners of the frame. Each side of the frame thus formed is connected with the circumference of the wheel B C by two cross-braces, E E, as seen in Fig. l.
By thisconstruction, I remove the propelling power complete from the center to the circumference, whereby it is propelled much easier either in heavy or light machinery.
By the support. of the braces, as described, the various parts, whether made of wood or iron castings or other metal, are not required to be of such large dimensions.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure byv The four levers G, applied directly to the circumference of the frame, each of said levers being connected and braced by the two levers next adjoining, shaft A, wheel B C D, rods a, and braces E, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL LANDES.
