PATENT Qrrrcni.
ROBERT B. TATUM, OF HELENA, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,745, dated February 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ROBERT B. TATUM, of Helena, in the county of Phillips and State of Arkansas, has invented a new and valuable Improvement in H orse-Powers; and doeshere by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
This invention has relation to horse-powers; and the novelty consists in the general construction and disposition of parts composing and connected with the main driving-wheel, whereby the latter is rendered stronger and more secure, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing A represents a vertical shaft, journaled to the sill B and frame 0. D designates radial arms or spokes mortised to the upper part of the shaft A, and supporting at their outer ends, which are notched, a wheel, This wheel is designed to be a gear-wheel, so as to convey motion and powerby engaging with another wheel connected with the machinery to be driven. F represents long radial arms, mortised to the shaft A some distance below the wheel E. These arms are used as draft-poles, and
are furnished with hooks or other equivalent devices, G, to which horses may be hitched.
. H designates braces secured to the shaft A;
thence extending upward and outward in diagonal and radial directions to the arms or spokes D, to which they serve as supports. The ends of the braces H are slotted so as to fit the spokes D. I denotes staples, secured to the wheel E, and arranged so as to embrace every alternate spoke. The poles F run parallel to the spokes unprovided with the staples I. J denotes posts standing at a slight inward incline upon the arms or poles F. The upper ends of said posts are slotted and receive the ends of the arms D running parallel to the poles F. In such position the posts J serve as braces to strengthen the poles F and arms D in their positions. A direct connection is made between each of the poles F and the wheel E by means of an iron rod, K. To each of the poles F a lateral security is given bymeans of iron rods f, coupled to staples g g inserted in the sides of said poles, and in the sides of the arms D last mentioned. Each of the rods f reaches diagonally from one of said arms to the next pole on the right or left, as the case may be.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a horse-power, the arrangement of the center-post A, wheel E, horizontal spokes D, draft poles F, oblique struts H, diagonal braces f, and vertical struts J, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT B. TATUM.
