Description

N. BQBROWN.
Improvement in Horse Power N0. I22,Q8Q Patentedlan,23,1872
UNITED STATES NATHANIEL B. BROWN, OF ANTWERP, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,989, dated January 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. B. BROWN, of Antwerp, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Power 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accoimaanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a horse-power for running a churn or other light machin- ,ery, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a side View, part in section, of my horsepower.
A represents a frame, of wood or iron, to which are bolted the castings which support the entire horse-power. B is a circular flange or plate provided with a hollow upright post, B in the center. This post has a shoulder, 01, around its circumference, upon which the hub G of the large gear-wheel D rests. The hub O is elongated, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to cause the gear to run true and steady. The plate B, with the hollow post 13 and a long casting, B are all cast in one piece and bolted to the frame A. In the casting B is a stud, 1), upon which hangs the gear and pinion E, said gear meshing with a pinion, Gr, upon a long shaft, H, which has its bearings in the casting B and a separate casting, B The shaft II should, upon its outer end, be provided with a pulley to connect with the machinery to be driven by the power. On the upper end of the hub O is fitted a casting, I, upon which the sweep or lever is attached.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The withindescribed horse-power, consisting of the frame A, plate B, hollow post B with shoulder a, elongated hub O, gear-wheel D, castings B B and I, gear and pinion E, pinion G, and shaft H, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of July, 1871.
N. B. BROWN.
