G. M. DE VILBISS BOX CAR DOOR Filed June 24, 1919 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
UNITED STATES .GEORGE M. DE VILBISS, OF STELLA, NEBRASKA.
BOX-CAR DOOR.
Application filed .Tune 24, 1919. Serial No. 306,347.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen M. Dr. VIL- BISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stella, in the county of Richardson and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Car Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grain car doors and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character which will readily permit the filling and emptying of a box car of grain and also permit of the car being; loaded to its fullest capacity with freight other than grain without lifting the freight over the entire height of the door. Another object of this invention is the provision of a box car door of the above stated character, which shall be simple, d11- rable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Vith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation partly in section of a box car door constructed in ac cordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 8-3 of Figure 1, r
Fig. '4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 1, illustrating the sections of the sectional door overlapping each other,
Referring in detail to the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the side of a box car having a doorway 2 extending from its upper edge to its lower edge and which doorway has positioned at its sid'eedges vertically disposed supporting posts 3. A solid door 4 is hinged to one of the posts 3 as illustrated at 5 and said door extends from the lower end of the doorway to a point adjacent the upper end of the doorway so as to form a filling space. The door 4 is adapted to close aportion of the doorway while a plurality of doors 6 are adapted to close the other portions of the doorway. The doors 6 are each hinged to the other post 3 as illustrated at 7 and are arranged one above the other as clearly shown in the drawings. The doors 4 and 6 are arranged to swing inwardly against the inner face of the side of the car when not in use. The doors 6 are provided with flanges 8 that are adapted to overlap or engage the adjacent door so as to prevent the grain in the car from leaking between the doors 6. The doors 6 at their free ends are also provided with flanges 9 that engage the free'edge of the door 4 to limit the outward movement of said door 4 and prevent accidental inwardmovement of said doors 6. The lower portion .of the door 4 is provided with an opening 10 that is closed by a hinged door 11. The door 11 is so hinged to the door 4 that the same swings outwardly of the car for the purpose of permitting the grain within the car to drain therefrom when desired.
The door 11 is-"held in closed position by means of spring catches 12.
The door 4 upon its outer face has pivoted thereto a locking lever 13 to which are pivoted upwardly and downwardly extenddoor 4 against outward movement of the car when in door closing position. From the foregoing description it will be noted that the door 4 can be locked in door closing position against inward and outward movement, and when so locked the doors 6 will be held against swinging inwardly of the car by the flanges thereof engaging the door 4. q
When it is desired to load the car with 4 is locked in a closed position and the freight is loaded in to the car through the remaining portion of the doorway which is left open when the doors 6 are in open position, and as the car becomes filled with freight the doors 6 can be moved to closed position one after another, each time first swinging door 4 slightly inwardly so as to be out of the path of movement of flanges 9 thus obviating the necessity of lifting the freight over the doors when desiring to load the car to its fullest capacity.
l/Vhile l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will. be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim i A car having a first and a second inwardly swinging door, relatively narrow flange means on the exterior of the first door overlapping the exterior of the second door and being disengageable from the second door through limited inward swinging movement of both doors, an exterior fastening means disposed longitudinally on the ing an interiorly disposed flange depending therefrom and crossing its junction with and engaging theadjacent section tofurther relieve said first mentioned flanges of undue out-ward pressure.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE M. DE VILBISS.
