HARRY v. Mans]: AND nnnnr J. STEPHENS, or cHIeAeo, ILLINOIS.
PLAQARD.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY V. MARSH and HENRY J. STEPHENS, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful .Placard, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relatesto placards and particularly to advertising "placards ondarily,
' combination, construction, of the several parts of our used in direct association with objects of merchandise.
The primary object ofthe invention is to provide a new and. novel means for connecting advertising matter with the object of merchandise to which it relates, and, seethe object of the invention is to minimize the 'cost of material for such advertising matterby reducing the quantity of material required therefor.
These, and suchother objects as may hereinafte'r appear are obtained by the .novel and arrangement device illustrated in the single sheet of drawing accompanying and made a part of this specification, and in which Fig.1 is a blank showing the'general configuration of one form, of the device; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one side, in any desired configuration.
Referring now to Fig. 1,.it will be-noted that the ordinal lis used to indicate the body of an advertisin'gplacard, and as 'here inbefore indicated, it 1 form, and also, m y printed on either y divided in" order I I to provide two equal sized quarter sections 2 and 2", hereinafter called tabs. The
jgreatest dimension of the semicircularrextension referred to, which isfat the line of I 555 its division from the. body 1, is equivalent to the diameter of a can of goods upon which may be of any general ortion, which ex- 23, 1923. Serial Illo. 629,764.
the device'is used, 3 'shownin Figl2, which can has the usual flange 3 at its-top." Scoring may be em 'ployed intermediatejbody 1 and tabs- 2 and} the internal portions ably parallel to one nother and to the sides of the can 3.
as for example, the can i which project.
- At the inner and uppermost portion of .each ear 4, oppositely disposed slots 5 are formed by stamping outa portion of the material. Slots 5 may be formed at the same time the blank hereinbefore referred to is made, and in conjunction with all of the other slits or cuts required, namely, the cut forming the tabs 2? and'2" the slit separating said tabs, ears 4. It is quite usual to cut or stamp) out the entire blank or several blanks at a single stroke of a die directed against. a single thiclmess of material, thus enabling tlfie mzler to'produce blanks at a high rate 0 spa I The purpose of slots 5 is to remove a ortion of material so as to freely-admitof the insertion .of the flanged top section" 3 of can 3 within theears 4, and at the same time to permit the tabs 2'? and2 oppo- 3 with their arcuafe peripheralportions in engagement with the interior wall of flange3. I I After manufacture of the device, and. the printing or decorating thereof, the device '1s taken in one hand and tabs 2 and 2 are folded and't-he ot erforwardly of the body I --Ho lding up the tabsl2and 2? with the fin- 'gers,' can-3 is slipped into. blank .1 withthe flange 3 of t isterin in the cutaway portions 5 in'ears 4. The ta s 2 and 2?" are then released to rest upon can 3 within flange 3.
and the cuts producing 1; right a'ngles,'one backwardlly sitelyf pointed, to' rest upon the top of can ositionv upon e former reg- The space intermediate ears-4 is such that of body 1 are frictional engagement between ears 4 and the sides of the can 3 results. Tabs 2 and. 2" when released peripherally engage the inside portion of the flange 3 on-can 3 whereby to hold, vertically upright, body 1 of the device. Frictional engagement of the surfaces of tabs 2 and 2 upon the top of the can and the peripheral friction hereinbefore referred to and relating to the edges of said tabs, coupled with the frictional engagement of can 3 and the ears 4 and that of flange 3 along the sides of the said ears, gives a snug and secure association between the can 3 and our device, and substantially prevents displacement thereof. It is quite manifest that the tabs 2 and 2 are reversible and that when both-surfaces printed, it too is reversible. Weclaim: I i
1. An advertising device for use upon a flanged can or the like and provided from a blank having a semicircular extension portion slit to provide equal sized tabs adapted to be folded in opposite directions, and
having additional extension portions with parallel interior edges cut away adjacent vided to form, when folded, quadrants adapted to be seated in opposite directions within said rimmed can top, and marginal extensions adjacent said centrally disposed extension for engaging the walls of said can at its'diameter. 1
