Description

w. ufAxTEn.
l l'ournal-Boxes, No.147,546 Patented Feb.17.1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE WILLIAM D. BAXTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONFIIALF HIS RIGHT TO ALFRED B. SANDS, -OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent N0.1117,54l6, dated FLM-nary 17, llgapplicaton filed January 31, 1574.
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, WILLTAM I). BAXTER, otl the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Journal-Boxes, of which the following' is a speeitication:
The object of' my invention is to provide for a jointed double journal box or bearings for axles of machinery in general, and more especially for a pump, for im proven] ents in which Letters Iatent Nos. 137,5,.7 and 83,027 were granted to me, bearin date April S, 1873, and October 13, 1868.
By the constant friction on the sides ot' the journa1-box in which the axle works, as well as of the sides ot' the chuck holding the axle, the meta-l wears away, and spaces are left between said chuck and the sides of the journalboxes, by which the aecurate motion ot' the arms or levers workin g the pistons is impaired.
My invention consists, instead of casting the journal-boxes together, to east theln separately in such a manner that one ot' said boxes only is east in one piece with the bed, which is provided with a female dovetail on the opposite side, and lengthened into a threaded bar in order to receive the male dovetail in the loose journal-box, and a nut which holds said dovctail firmly to the bed.
Then thet sides ot' the chuck and the jonrnal-box are worn or reduced, it is only required to remove the nut and the female-dovetailed journal-box, and remove, by tiling, so much of the shoulders ot the part of the bed from which the male dovetail extends as the meta-l worn away from the sides in order to insure, at all times, a steady and accurate bearing.
In order to more fully describe my inven tion, I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a side view oi' journal-boxes, ehuek, and axle embodying my invention. Fig. II is a sectional view of the same through line x :10,Fig. I. Fig. III is a detached enlarged side View ot' the fixed journal-box, bed, male dovetail, and threaded bar. Fig. IV is a detached enlarged side view of the movable journal-box.
A is the chuck holdingthe axleB. O is the bed ot the journal-box D ,QE is the male dovetail, extending from the bed C. F .is the threaded round bar, extending from the male dovetail E. (fir is a nut iitting the threaded bar F. r/ g are shoulders of the male doveta-il E. II is the journal-box, with a female dovetail, I, in the lower end, titte/d to receive the male dovetail E.
Having thus described my invention, I de sire to ela-ini The journalboxes D and II, having dovetails E andI, threaded bar F, nnt G, and bed O, substantially as described.
IVM. D. BAXTER.
