Description
DeW. C. GLOUGH. Journal-Bearings,
N0.\52,277. Patentedlune23,1874.
INVENTUR ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DE VITT C. GLOGH, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BEARINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l52,277, (lated June Q3, 1874; appli ation filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, DE WITT C. CLoUGU, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Journal-Boxes with Babbitt-Metal Bearings, of which the following is a specification:
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section on the line c c, Fig. 2, ofthe pattern for casting my improved journal-box. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the linea' x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 a crosssection of the babbitt-metal lining ofthe box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corrresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to construct an improved journalbox in such a manner that the bearing or lining of babbittmetal is rigidly and intimately connected therewith without a possiblityof getting detached therefrom. My invention consists in providing the journal-boxes with s ide grooves or channels, to be lled with babbitt-metal in connection with the journal-bearin gs.
In the drawing, A represents the pattern for forming the lnolds for my improved journal-box. It has outer inclined sides, and is provided with inclined side recesses a, which extend along the full length of the inner top part of the same, the lower part of the recess forming near the face ends of the box short shoulders a', Fig. 1, for supporting thereon detachable strips b, of such size that the lower part of recesses a., between shoulders af, is left entirely free when the strips are placed thereon. The shape of the strips b conforms to the inclination of recesses a', and the shape ofthe top part of the box.
For forming the mold the sand is rammed firmly around the outer side of the pattern. The upper part of the mold is obtained by ramming the sand into the semicircular part, and the grooves or recesses formed below the detachable strips. The upper part may be readily lifted from the base part of the mold, as the strips b allow the separation without difficulty.
. In casting the journal-box the detachable strips are left out of the mold, so that the space taken up by the same is filled up by the metal, forming a solid box with grooves or channels along' its sides, into which the babbitt-metal lining or bearing O may be cast and rigidly retained by the eXtension-anges C', which are produced by the filling up of the .side grooves ot' the box, as shown in Figs. 2
and 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A journalbox, east with longitudinal side grooves or channels, extending between sb oulders near the face parts for producing a iirm binding of the babbitt-metal lining cast therein, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
DE VITT C. CLOUGH.
Titnessesz F. G. DAY, HERBERT D. ULoUGH.
