IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESSSADDLES.

De it known that I, STEPHEN A. MAR-knit, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State ot' Indiana, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Combination Braces and Loops t'or Harness-Saddles, &o. 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a t'ull, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accomlm-nying drawings, which form part ot' this sl'iecitication', and in which- Figure l is a top view ot a skirt having my improved combination brace and loop. Fig. 2 is a side view ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom or rear view ot' thc same, showing the spring and its mode ot attachment to the skirt, and

Fig. 4 is a view ot' the combination brace and loop detached from the skirt and jockey.

Similar letters ot` reference indicate corresponding parts in all the tigures.

My invention has for its object to produce a combination brace and loop for harness-saddles, in which a metallic spring is secured to the leather skirting by a boltwhich forms a part ofthe metallic brace and loop, cast in one piece, as hereinafter described.

By reference to the drawing it will be seen that A is the skirt, and I is the jockey or housing, stitched on three sides, at I), b, and b, to the skirt, but having a blind stitching at the lowerlnost side, b', so as to form a pocket or receptacle for the shank (l of the brace. This shank, as seen in Fig. 4, has a hole, c, which, when thebrace is placed in position on the skirt, between that and the jockey, will correspond with the two pertorations e and il, the former of which is in the jockey B, and the latter in the skirt A. Through the hole thus formed, by corresponding pertorations in the jockey, brace, and skirt, l pass the torretbolt, which is fastened by means of a nut in the harness plate or pad, in the usual way, and thus serves to sccurel y imite the shank of the brace to the skirt.

The shank C, stem I), and loop E, are all made in one casting, of iron, steel, or any other suitable metal, and may be japanned, so as to imitate leather; or it maybe gilt, plat-ed, or ornamented in any other suitable way.

rlhe lower portion of the stein, just :above the loop, is provided with a bolt, c, on the under side, which passes through a corresponding holo in the skirt, and also through a corresponding perforation in the spring F, which latter is placed on the under side of the leather skirting A, and held in place by the bolt c (which forms a part of the said loop and brace) and nut f, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This spring keeps the lower portion of the skirt in proper shape, and acts also as a brace, giving Italso prevents the nutffrom `wearing on the leather.

It is made of niet-al, preferably steel, and is securely held in place by the bolt e and flanged nutf. The two lian ges of the latter are perforated, as shown in Fig. 3, so that it may be tacked onto the under side of the skirt, and

thus prevented from turning or working loose.

B y securing the spring F to the leather skirting by the bolt c, which forms a part of the loop and brace proper, in the manner shown, I obtain simplicity ot' construction, coupled with great solidity and strength.

I therefore claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters PatentrIhe coi'nbination ot' the spring F, leather sk irting A, and metallic brace having the bolt c formed as a part thereof, substantially as described.
