An object of the invention is to provide a combination square of'extremely simple con struction which may be used for a great many purposes in laying out work.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination square) which affords extreme accuracy.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, someof which, with V the foregoing, will be set forth in the foll lowing description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. The combination square in the present embodiment of thefinvention comprises a"- rectangular frame-Q -preferably made of a single casting. The bushing26 is initially inserted in the aperture section 23 through the section 22, and may be held loosely or tightly in the former by means of the externally threaded hollow nut 27 which engages the internal threads 28 of the bushing. Extending through the nut and engaging in the threaded portion 29 of the sleeve is a screw 31 carrying at its point a feather 32 which is arranged to engage in a longitudinally extending groove 33 formed in one side of the blade. Connection between the screw and feather is provided by means of the reduced end 34 of the screw, which rotatably fits ina central aperture 36 formed in the feather and countersunk for the reception of theflattened extremity of the screw. The feather is held against rotation with respect to the sleeve but allow-ed reciprocative movement by being mounted in a slot 37 formed in the sleeve. The opposite sides of the groove 33 of the blade are tapered, and the sides of the feather are tapered correspondingly so that the feather may be tightly wedged in the groove when the screw 31 is fully advanced. Suitably held on the sleeve against rotation therewith, is an indicating member 38, which as here shown is formed with a straight sided segment 39 which is adapted to fit against a similar formed segment 41 formed on the portion of the sleeve which protrudes from the aperture. The indicating member is provided with a'pointer 42 which is arranged to cooperate with a graduated segment 43 formed on the frame and being concentric with the sleeve. The indicating member is adapted to rest against the side 0;" the frame, and a washer is preferably interposed between said member and the shoulder 44 of the nut 27 so that the turning of the nut will not effect the indicating member or the sleeve. In order that the movement of the nut will be limited and still allow the sleeve to be properly tightened or loosened, I preferably form a cut out segment 46 at the end of the nut and place screw 45 in the sleeve for engagement with the ends of said segment. When it is desired to use the device as a bevel protractor, the blade is inserted in the slot so that the feather engages the groove. With the blade then moved to the desired angle (as will be indicated by the'position of the pointer on the graduated segment) the nut is turned so as to tightly clamp the sleeve and indicator against the frame. The screw 31 is then turned so as to cause the feather to wedge securely in the groove and thereby hold the blade in rigid position. To release the members the foregoing steps are practically reversed. The device is also particularly adapted for measuring the taper of a shaft. This is done by merely setting one of the sides of the frame and one of the edges of the blade against the side and end of the shaft. The blade may be then clamped and the device will be set to the correct taper.
The sides 47 and 48 are provided with level glasses 49 and 50 respectively, thereby enabling the device to be used as a level and plumb level.
I claim:
1. in a combination square, a frame having a ll-shaped depression formed on one face thereof and extending from one end of the frame to the other, said frame being provided with a slot lying parallel to'said depression and extending inwardly from the apex thereof, and a blade adapted to slidably fit in said slot and extend into said depression.
2. In a combination square, a frame having a if-shaped depression formed on one side and extending longitudinally thereof, said frame having a slot running parallel with and communicating with said depression and having one side thereof exactly terminating at the apex of said depression and havingthe other side terminating intermediate one of the sidesof said depres sion, and a blade adapted to slidably fit in said slot and extend into said depression.
3. In a combination square, a frame having a longitudinally extending V-shaped depression formed one one side thereof, said frame having a slot communicating with said depression and: having one side thereof terminating exactly at the apex of said depression and having the other side terminating intermediate one of the sides of said depression, and a blade adapted to slidably fit in said slot and extend into said depression, a longitudinally extending portion of the frame from the apex to the other side of said groove being cut away for the insertion of a scribing tool.
4. In a combination square, a frame having a slot, a blade adapted to slidably fit in said slot and provided with a longitudinal. groove having tapered sides, and means adapted to ress a ainst said sides whereb x I J said blade will be clamped against said frame.
5. In a combination square, a frame havinga slot, a blade adapted to slidably lit in said slot and provided with a groove, feather adapted to engage in said groove, and a screw connected to said feather whereby the latter may be moved in or out of said groove.
6. In a combination square, a frame having a slot, a blade adapted to slidably, fit in said slot and provided with a groove having tapering sides, a beveled feather adapted to engage the sides of said groove and provided,
fixed to said feather and rotatively held in said opening whereby said feather may be vmoved in or out of said groove upon the turning of the screw.
7. In a combination square, a frame having a slot and an aperture having tapering walls, a bladeadapted to slidably fit'in said slot and provided with a groove, a-feather adapted to engage in said groove, a sleeve adapted to fit in said opening provided with correspondingly tapered outer walls and a threaded portion, a threaded nut adapted to engage said threaded portion whereby said sleeve may be drawn tightly in said frame, and a screw extending through said nut and engaging in said sleeve adapted for moving said feather in or outof said groove.
8. In a combination square, a frame having aslot and an aperture having tapering side walls, a blade adapted to slidably fit in said slot and provided with a groove, a sleeve fitting in said aperture having outer walls corresponding to said aperture, said'sleeve having an internally threaded portion, a threaded nut adapted to engage said threaded portion whereby said sleeve may be tightly held in the frame, and a screw respectively extending through and engaging said nut and sleeve and rotatably attachedto said feather whereby the latter willbe moved in or out of said groove upon the rotation of the screw.
9.
