Be it known that I, ANDREW LAenncnnN, a, citizen ot' the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county ot Blair and State ot Pennsylvania, have. invented new and useful improvements in Combination Tools, of which the tollowing is a specification.
The object ot the invention is to provide a machinists measurinf'fr and plotting tool designed particularly ior what is known as end shatt work in squaring the ends of shafts, laying oil angular sockets and key ways in shatting, detern'iining centers of ellipses as applied to eccentrics and the like where accuracy oil adjustment is essential and to this end, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts ol which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which y Figure 1, is a side view ot the tool.
Figure 2, is an edge view ot the same.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are sectional views respectively on the planes indicated by the lines 3-43, 4 4, and 5 5 of Figures 1 and 2.
The instrumentembodies essentially the parallel bars 10 and 11 connected by the pivotal links 12 which are adapted to be locked to secure the bar 10 in adjusted relation with the bar 11, thumb nuts 13 engaging pivot pins or screws 14 ot' which the latter are mounted in thc bar 10 being employed tor this purpose.
Mounted upon the bar 10` is a slide or traveler 15 which carries a graduated gauge bar 1G disposed perpendicularly to the inner edges oft both bars 10 and 11. Carried at one end ot the main bar 11 is a tor-lt 17 ol which the arms are perpendicularly disposed to each other so that the inner edges 18 are at right angles to each othern the apex of the angle being positioned tor bisection by the inner edge ot the bar 10 when the latter1v .is at the limit of' its adjustment toward the bar 11 at which time it abuts the stops 19 `of 20 carried terminally by the latter bar.
also connecting the bars 10 and 11 is a fine adjustment device consisting of a rod 21 slidabl'v titted in an opening 22 formed iliametrically in the swivel bar 23, the latter beinatermed with reduced stem extending through the bar 11 and receiving at'its lower end a` nut abutting the under tace of the bar 11, the stem providing a. swivel or pivotal connection ot the block or. post Q3 with the bar 11. The post or block 23 is titted with a clamp 24 consisting of a cylindrical head disposed axially within the post and formed with a transverse opening throiiigh which the rod 21 passes as clearly shown in Figure 4. The head'ot the clamp is adapted t'or axial movement in the seat or porri-iet formed in the post and when drawn toward the upper end ot the post eifects a clamping engagement on the rod 21 because et bringing the latter against the upper side ot the opening 22, thel lower side o1 the opening in the head at that time trictionally engaging the rod 21. movement ot the head ot' the clamp is ettected by means ot a threaded stem with which the thumb nut engages, the latter bearing on top of the post. It will be evident that when the clamp is loosened, the
rod Q1 may slide longitudinally through the opening- 22 in the post and the latter being swivelly connected with the bar 11, when longitudinal movement ot the rod 21 is etiected, pivotal movement of the post will ensue. That end of the rod 21 remote from the post is externally threaded and engages a thumb screw or nut 26 which is disposed between guide ears 27 constituting the upstanding element ot' a U-shaped member pivotally mounted on the bar 10, as clearly shown in Figure 5, this pivotal connection being ot the same character as the swivel connection of the post. 23 with. the bar 11. Then the bars 10 and 11 have been adjusted the approximate distance apart, the turning` ot the nut 26 will secure the tine adjustment desired, this beineof course. gauged by the graduations on the gauge bar 16.
To effect the approximate or initial adjustment ot the two bars, the thumb nut ot the clamp 24 is loosened when tree sliding movement ot the rod 21 with reference to the clamp and post 23 is permitted. After obtaining approximate adjustment, the clamp 24 is tightened and the line adjustment made as above indicated after which it is maintained by the -tightening of the thumb nuts 13.
The instrument has many useful functions in the machinist-s work but particularly is it serviceable in laying ott squares and other polygons on the end of a shaft. When the bar 1.0 is disposed against the stops 19 on the bar 11, it extends diametri- Longitudinal cally across any shaft, the end of which may be seated in the crotch of the fork 17. The size of the square or other polygon being determined upon, the bar 10 is then adjusted away from the bar 11 half the width of the square or diameter of the polygon and the inner side of the bar 10 may then be used as a gauge to inscribe that particular side. The gauge bar 1G can be employed to inscribe a line at right angles to the rst said line, if desired, or two lines across the diameter may be drawn at angles toeach other but within .the center of the square and the sides of the square or polygon inscribed around this center.
The inner edge of the bar 11 between the stop 19 and the fork 17 is beveled to provide a ready inscribing or marking edge an-:l may be employed to advantage in many operations.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. Ameasuring instrument of the type indicated having parallel relatively movable bars, connecting means for operating the same in parallelism, a gauge bar carried by one ot said parallel bars for movement longitudinally thereof, and a fine adjustment device connecting said parallel bars and em bodying a rod having a sliding connection with one of the bars and an adjustable connection with the other.
2. A measuring instrument of the type indicated having parallel relatively movable bars and means for connecting the same, a gauge bar adjustably mounted ior longitudinal movement on one of said bars, and a line adjustment device connecting .the bars and consisting of a rod having a threaded portion, a swivel block carried by one of the bars, a clamp carried by the swivel block, the latter and the clamp adjustablv connecting said rod, and an adjusting nut mounted on the other bar and engaging the threaded portion of said rod.
3. A measuring instrument of the type indicated having parallel bars and links conneeting the same, clamping means for securing the means in adjusted relation to the bars, a slide or traveler mounted upon one of the bars and carrying a gauge bar disposed perpendicularly to the adjacent edges of said bars, an armed fork or yoke carried by one 01"' the bars, the bar carrying the yoke being provided with stops limiting the movement of the other bar relative thereto to dispose the inneredge of said other bar in bisecting relation with the angle between the inner edges of said fork or yoke, and a fine adjustment device operatively connected with both bars.
