CHARLESG} TAYL'on, or KINDERSIJEY,SASKATCHEWAN, oANAnA.
RETAINING- DEVICE FOR DEMOUNTABLE 'RIMST Applieatiomfilem June 22,
To all whom it may concern: I
Be :it'- known .thati GHARLns G; TAYLOR, a subject of the .Kin'g'otrGreat Britaismzres siding at .,Kindersley,.in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and:use=ful, ilinprovements in a Retaining;De-vicafOr Demountable Rims, ofiwhich "the: following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a retaining device for demountable rims having for its principal object to provide readily accessible and easily operated means for retaining a demountable rim in place and allowing the same to be removed when desired.
A further object of the invention is to generally improve upon retaining means of this nature by providing a device which will be extremely simple and eflicient in construction, reliable in operation, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which is it designed.
WVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the descrip tion progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a wheel e1nbodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a section taken therethrongh,
Figure 3 is a detailed section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1 on a larger scale,
Figure 1 is a detailed perspective of a bolt,
Figure 5 is a detailed perspective of a locking device, and
' Figure 6 is a detailed perspective of one of supporting brackets.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will 7 be seen that a felly 1 supports a plate 2 having legs 3 radiating therefrom and formed integral with or attached to the felly 1. A
; gear element 1 is rotatably mounted on the plate 2 being provided with an annular Vflange 5 engaged by brackets 6. This gear element 4 is provided with a beveled gear portion 7 and' an internal gear portion 8.-
. Aspur gear 9 meshes with the internal gear portion 8 and is supported on a rod 10 suitablyjournalled in the plate 2 and terminating at one end in a square shank 11 so that a wrench may be engaged therewith. As is 1922." Sri'a-I N O. 57012713 indicated. tori advantage rinz F1i gure 1; a plus and the plate 2 and normally holdsthe rod 12 in a locked position, that is so that its end projects through one of the apertures in the spur gear 9.
A plurality of bolts 16 are supported slidably in the brackets 17, 18 and 19. The outerend of these bolts 16 are subtantially rectangular in cross section being formed with'heads 20 While the other ends thereof are threaded as at 21. The threaded ends 21 are mounted in brackets 18 and 19 and a nut 22 is mounted thereon between these brackets and is formed with a beveled gear portion 23 normally meshing with the beveled gear portion 7 of the gear element 4. The heads 20 project through the brackets 17 and prevent the rods from turning. It will therefore be seen that upon rotation of the gear element 4; by the spur gear 9 the nuts 22 will be rotated thereby moving the bolts 16 inwardly or outwardly depending upon the direction of rotation. When the bolts are moved outwardly the heads 20 are adapted to move along side of a demountable rim 25 so that the same will be held therebetween and between lip 26 permanently formed on the folly.
It is thought that the operation and construction of my invention will now be understood without a more detailed description thereof, but it is to be understood that numerous changes may be resorted to in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. In combination, a felly, a demountable rim on the felly, a plate supported by the telly interiorly thereof, a gear element rotatable on the plate and including an internal gear portion and a beveled gear portion, a spur gear rotatable on the plate and engageable with the gear portion, means for rotating the spur gear, means for locking the spur gear, a plurality of bolts, brackets for receiving said bolts, nuts threadedly mounted on said bolts, said nuts provided with beveled gear portions meshing with the beveled gear portions of said gear elements whereby thebolts may be moved in and out of engagement with the demounta ble rim in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination, a felly, a demountable rim 0n the telly, a plate supported by the felly interiorly thereof, a gear element rotatable on the plate and including an internal gear portion and a beveled gear portion, a spur gear rotatable on the plate and engageable with the gear portions and provided with an annular series of apertures, a spring pressed bolt piercing the plate and insertible in said apertures ofsaid spur gear for locking the same against rotation, means for rotating the spur gear, a. plurality of bolts, brackets for receiving said bolts, nuts threadedlyinounted on said bolts, said nuts provided with beveled gear portions meshing with the beveled gear portions of said gear element whereby the bolts may be moved in and out of engagement with the demountable rim in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES G. TAYLOR.
Witnesses I WILLIAM BROWN, CHARLES W. BAKER.
