NITED STATES WILBERT F. BROW'N, OF RICHMOND, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR CLAMPlNG TIRE-BOLTS.
:SPECIFICATIOIJ forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,392, dated August 4, 1885.
(Mod e1.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILBERT F. BROWN, of Richmond, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Devices for Hold ing Tire-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for holding loose bolts while the nuts are being put on or taken off; and it consists in the combination of a bent frame,\vhich is to be applied to a wheel or other object, with a screw-clamping rod which is passed through the frame and made to press against the head of the bolt while the nut is being put on or taken off, as will he more fully described hereinaftcr.
The object of my invention is to produce a device which can be readily applied to various objects for the purpose of holding the bolts from turning while their nuts are being loosened or tightened.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of a device embodying my invention.
A represents a suitable frame, preferably of the shape here shown, and which has its ends B turned inward in opposite directions, so as to catch under opposite edges of the folly, and
thus hold the frame in position while in use. This frame A is thickened at its central part, 0, for the purpose of forming a solid bearing for the clamping-bolt D. This clamping-bolt D is made screw threaded where it passes through the part 0 of the frame, and is pro vided at its outer end with a suitable handle or crank by means of which it is operated. The frame A is applied to the rim of the wheel, as shown, and then the clamping-bolt is screwed down until its inner end bears directly upon the outer end of the bolt, whioh is passed through the tire and felly of the wheel with sufficient force to prevent the bolt from turning. The wrench or other tool is then applied to the nut upon the inner end of the bolt and tightened in place without having the bolt revolve, as it will do if no means are used for holding it in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a device for holding tire-bolts, the combination of the bent frame having its two ends turned inwardly in opposite directions, and the screw D, which is passed through the center of the frame and made to bear against the head of the bolt while the frame is applied to the rim of the wheel, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILBERT F. BROWN.
