UNITED STATES PATENT, Orrice.
E. NELSON RITTASE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
OVEN-PEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 336,349, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed July 9, 1885. Serial No. 171,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. NELsoN RITTASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ballimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Iinprovementsin Oven- Peels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved ovenpeel.
The-object of the invention is to provide a peel, which is an instrument for placing bread in and removing it from ovens, whose blade and handle may be laterally adjusted with respect to each other, thereby to enable the blade in the oven to take positions not otherwise practicable.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, in which Figurelis a top view ofthe improved peel. Fig.2is anedge viewofthesame. Fig.3 is a top view, larger scale, ofthe adjustable con: nection between the blade and handle. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the connection. Fig. 5 is a View of the pivot. Fig. 6 is a view of the dog.
The letter A designates the blade, B the handle, and O O the connection between the two. The connection consists of two parts, one of which, O, is a plate having several holes d, for bolts or rivets, by which it is attached rigidly to the blade A. This plate hasacircularhub. e, with a flange-rim, e, and an annular groove, f, out under the rim, or between the rim and plate. A part of this rim is notched to form ratchetteeth 9, while the remainder of itis smooth. A central hole, h, is through the hub for the pivot h. The other part, 0, of the connection has a central boss, 2', on the lower side and a horizontal socket, i, in the boss, and at the end has a clip, k. The handle B has its extremity entered in the socket 1', while it is clamped to the end by the clip, the nuts k on the clip serving to tighten or release it. The handle part of the connection has a square bolthole, If, and on its lower side two lugs, Z, one either side of the said hole, and diamet- These lugs 00- cupy the annular groovef under the hub-rim, and the pivot-bolt h passes through the hub (N0 model.)
and handle part and is secured by having its head a next to the blade. That part of the pivot-bolt next to the head is round, in order that the hub e may turn freely on it, while that part 0 which occupies the hole h" is square, in order to prevent its turning. A dog, 1), is pivoted on a bolt, q, and occupies a slot, 1', in the handle part. The dog has such position with respect to the ratchetteeth g of the hub that it may engage therewith when tilted forward, as in the drawings, and may be released therefrom when tilted back. The dog therefore serves as a, locking device to hold the ratchet, and when so holding it the blade A and handle B are maintained rigidly with respect to each other. On top of the dog is a shoulder, 19, and a spring, 8, has one end secured by a rivet, t, to the handle part, while the other end bears on the shoulder of the dog.
The arrangement is such that the spring will retain the dog in either the forward or back position. The upward-projecting end 19 of the dog serves as a handle by which its position may be shifted to look or unlock the ratchet.
By thus connecting the blade and handle of an oven-peel the blade may be set to take a variety of positions, and thereby readily have access to all parts of the oven.
Having described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States An oven peel having in combination a blade, a handle, a circular hub provided with a rim having ratchet-teeth g, and an annular groove, f, under the said rim and attached to the blade, a handle part, 0, having a pivot-bolt hole and two lugs, Z, one either side of said hole and diametrically opposite each other and attached to the handle, a pivot-bolt connecting the hub and handle part, and a dog,
I p. pivoted on the handle part to engage with the ratchet-teeth, as set forth.
In testimony whereof IatliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. NELSON RITTASE. Witnesses:
