A. L. BECK CALCULATOR Filed sew. v. 1922 a @N. i I,
INVENTUR A-LBECM;
A TTORNE Y8 Patented Nov. 13, 1923.
PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW LEE BECK, or ORLANDO, FLORIDA.
CALCULATOR.
Application filed September 7, 1922. Serial No. 586,750.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW LEE BECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orlando, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to calculators, and more particularly to an improvement in lumber calculators of the type forming the subjectanatter of my copending application, filed Dec. 16, 1921, Serial No. 522,815.
The object of the invention is to PIOVldG an extremely simple and durable lumber calculator which may be readily operated and manipulated to enable the user to ascertain the number of board feet contained in any given number of pieces of lumber of any given dimensions without the necessity of carrying out any mathematical calculations or processes.
Other objects and advantages ,of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described .and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompany ng drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a view thereof in longitudinal vertical section; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in ele vation, illustrating a portion of the chart.
Referring to the drawings wherein for.
the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 10 designates side plates which with the table 11 make up the frame of the calculator. The side plates 10 are provided with hearing slots 1.2 open at their upper ends and with inclined faces or seats 13. A chart bearing cylinder or roller 14: is provided and is formed with trunnions 15 which are rotatably received in the bearing slots 12. An indexing bar 16 is supported upon the inclined faces or seats 13 and is fastened thereto. The arrangement is such that when the bar 16 is assembled with the side plates it is cooperatively disposed with respect to the chart on the cylinder 14. Moreover it serves to maintain the cylinder in position that .is it prevents displacement of the trunnion 15 of the cylinder from the groove 12. Preferably the fastening means 17 which serves to secure or fasten the index bar to the inclined faces or sides 13 comprise screws or other removable and releasable devices, thus providing for disassembly if desired.
The chart which is wrapped around the cylinder 14 corresponds substantially with the chart or table employed in the device forming the subject-matter of my 00-.
pending application and includes as before groups of figures, designated at 20, which represent the length in feet of the boards and a plurality of sets of figures 21 arranged adjacent each group 20 and representing in inches the width and thickness in which ,the lumber of adjacent groups comes. The body of the chart is provided with horizontal and vertical lines, as before, but in this case the lines extend circumferentially and transversely when the chart is wrapped on the cylinder and these lines provide the spaces in which the computed figures 22 are disposed. The index bar carries a series of numbers 24 which represent the number of pieces of lumber computed. It is obvious that when the cylinder is turned to bring the number of the group 20 immediately above the index bar, the number of board feet in any given number of pieces of lumber may be immediately ascertained by observing the particular computed number which is disposed immediately above and adjacent to the number of the series 23 of the index bar which corresponds to the number of pieces of lumber to be computed.
I claim:
1. A calculator comprising a frame, a chart bearing. cylinder rotatably mounted on the frame, a combined indexing and retaining bar secured to the frame and cooperable with'the cylinder.
2. A calculator comprising side plates having vertical bearing slots open up c1 ends and also mvidcd with faces, a chart bearing cylinder trunnions rotatably received in said clots, and an index bar scatcd inclined faces of the side platcs; and. thereto, the indc; bar being thus at the i2? inclined 1112mm g bum-mg against; the
