UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. GREENLEE, OF CLARKSVILIJE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED-DEALERS CALCULATED PRICE-LIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,663, dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed "February 13, 1886. Serial No. 191,904. (No model.)
T @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL A. GREENLEE, of Clarksville, Greene county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Feed-Dealers Calculated Price-Lists,which improvement is fully set forth in the following 'Y speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y This invention has relation to improvements in calculators; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
rlhe object of my invention is to provide a suitable device known as a price-list for mill-men or feed-dealers, whereby the price of grain, te., is always calculated, as will be seen in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure illustrates a perspective view of my device, a part of the top boxing being broken away to show the means for carrying the movable slotted arm, all of which will be more fully hereinafter specified. Y
The letter A designates the frame of my improvement, made in rectangular form, having at its top portion a cap 0r boxing, A', for a purpose hereinafter described. To the face part of this frame is secured a card-board, A2. At the top of said board, in a horizontal line,
' is a row ot' figures ranging from 60e. to $2.25.
These figures represent the price per hundredweight. Immediately under each of the hundred-weight figures, so called, is a vertical double companion row of figures. These two vertical rows lie parallel and are ruled into equal squares. Theleft vertical row represents the number of pounds from l to 12 and from 9() to 99, and its parallel companion row indicates the price in cents from l to 7 and 54 to 59. In practice the left vertical row of gures, indicating pounds, is from l to 99, inclusive, and its companion row of calculated figures, representing cents, ranges from l to 59. The break in the consecutiveness of the figures in the vertical lines, as shown in the drawing, is made to condense and simplify the illustration. l A similar omission is made in the horizontal 5o line of figures representing the price per hundred-weight. In practice this horizontal line increases from left to right and decreases from right to left in its price representation by an arithmetical ratio of live cents. No increase or decrease in price less than iive cents per hundredweight or multiples thereof is estimated in the calculation.
As'it would not be practical to make all possible calculations between the minimum price aforesaid and the maximum, and also for every pound from one up to ninety-nine pounds, I present what I deem proper to fully show my invention.
The letter B indicates a slide movable horizontally. This slide has a central vertical slot corresponding in width to the width of two of the vertical rows of figures. The letters a a indicate the two parallel vertical arms of the slide. The lower end of said slide is provided with a handle, B.
The upper end of the slide or movable arm B is provided with two short bent arms, b b, in which are j ournaled two rollers, c c. These rollers are mounted on a cross-bar, D. The ends of this cross-bar are secured at c to the inner ends of theboxing A. Thisbar is shown through the broken opening in the boxing. The continuation-outer ends thereof-is shown in dotted lines.
The operation of the device is as follows: Vhen the value of feed is seventy-five cents per hundred-weight, the slide B is moved so that the 750. per cwt.77 on the board will appear through the slotin the side-a'. e., between the arms aa of said slide. When in this position, the double vertical row of gures-one indicating pounds from 1 to 99 and the other cents from l t-o 74-also appears through said slot. Now, these two companion parallel vertical lines are so arranged that immediately adjoining on the l'right each figure representing pounds is the figure which indicates the price at seventy-tive cents per hundred-weight. Suppose ninety-five pounds of feed are sold at seventy-ve cents per hundred-weight, (the slide being in the position shown in the accompanying drawing.) It will be seen by referring to the gure 95 in the vertical lbs. line that the gurejl ap pears as its companion. It thereby readily appears that at seventy-five cents per hundred-weight ninety-five pounds will cost seventy-one cents. At the same price per hundred-weight ten pounds will cost eight cents, ninety-eight will cost seventy-four cents, Svc.
All calculations, of course, are previously made and printed, so that the price per hundred-weight and the iigures and cents in the vertical companion lines will correspond and.
readily disclose the desired information, substantially as set forth in the illustration and description given above of the rate at seventyve cents per hundred-weight.
In the drawing it will be seen that a thin vertical line separates the double companion rows representing lbs and cts., while a comparatively heavy line (and in practice preferably a colored one) separates the double companion rows. By this means the eye can readily follow a line and locate the desired figures without the aid ofthe movable handle or slotted slide. The slide, however, is so easily manipulated that it is preferably employed in locating` the righ-t iigures.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A board having on its face a horizontal row of figures, preferably at its top, representing a price per hundred-weight, a series of iigures in double companion rows running at right angles to the said hundred-weight row, each of the double companion rows represent` ing pounds and cents, respectively, and lying immediatelyunder theigure in the hundred- Weight row with which it conforms, in combination with a vertically-slotted slide movable horizontally, the slotin the said slide conforming in width to the width ofone of the double companion rows representing` pounds and cents, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. A board having on its face a horizontal row of gures, preferably at its top, representing a price per hundred-weight, a series of iigures in double companion rows running at right angles to the said hundred-weight row, each of the double companion rows representing pounds and cents, respectively, and lying immediately under the iigure in the hundredweight row with which it conforms, in combi nation with a vertically-slotted slide movable horizontally, the slotin said slide conforming in width to the width of one of the double companion rows representing pounds 'and cents, and a boxing or cap at the top of the board, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing` as niyinvention I hereto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL A. GREENLEE.
