J. H. NEWHARD CONTAINER Filed Feb. 28 1922 l affozueq Patented Nov. 13, 1923 UNITED STATES l tiltfiiiil JOHN H. NEWHARD, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONTAINER.
Application filed February 28, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. NEW'HARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Container, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a container and closure therefor, particularly adapted in connection with a collapsible chair or stool.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container which permits a stool or chair to be collapsed and folded and the container is to be made small enough that it may be readily portable.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container with tight closures for the same so that the contents of the container may not be injured from water, dirt or the 20 like.
My invention also provides a receptacle for carrying a collapsible and portable chair or stool within the closure, for the same is held in position by a novel locking means.
5 lVith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind,'the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts and operations to be more fully described,
: claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved chair or stool collapsed.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective of the container and the closure therefor.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein corresponding characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several, views, the numeral 5 designates a cylindrical casing open at both ends and which is provided with a transverse partition 6 at its center. The casing 5 is provided with an ornamental covering of leather or other material 7 and a handle 8 whereby the chair or contents of the container are carried. Assuming a collapsible chair is mounted in the casing 5 in one compartment alforded by the partition 6 and capable of sliding movement therein is a spider 8 to which a plurality of radially disposed legs 10 are pivoted. A rotatable latch Serial No. 539,810.
indicated in its entirety at 11 is carried by the spider 8 and is engageable with the pivoted ends of the legs to hold the same against pivotal movement when the legs are extended from the casing.
Also slidably mounted in the other compartment afforded by the partition 6 is a spider 12 which is identical to the spider 8 and which includes legs 13 similar to the legs 10 and to the outer ends of which a flexible seat 14 is secured.
Secured within the casing 5 and extending the entire length thereof is a longitudinal flange or guide 15 to prevent axial movement of the spiders 8 and 12. The ends of the casing or container 5 are provided with spaced radially disposed notches 17 through which the legs 10 and 13 of the spiders 8 and 11 pass when the same are extended from the casing.
For each end of the casing 5 a removable closure 18 is provided. As each of these closures are identical a detail description of one will apply to both. Secured to the end of the casing is a plurality of L-shaped clips 19 which slidably receive the closure 18. Extending at right-angles to one edge of the closure 18 and formed integral therewith is a tongue 20 which carries a lug or boss 21 upon its outer face. A pivoted U- shaped locking bail 22 is carried by the casing 5 and is adapted to engage the lug or boss 21 and thereby retain the closure 18 against lateral movement.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same. and that various changes in the shape size and arrangementof parts may he re sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States 1s:
1. A device of the character described including a tubular body, a plurality of L shaped clips carried by the end thereof, a closure slidably received in the clips, a tongue extending at rightangles thereto,
and means on the casing for engagement with the tongue to lock the closure against movement.
2. A device of the character described 5 comprising a tubular body, a plurality of clips carried thereby and arranged at the edges thereof, a closure slidably received in the clips, a tongue carried thereby and extending at right angles thereto and overlying the body, a boss formed on the tongue 10 and a locking bail pivoted to the body and engageable With the boss to lock the cover against sliding movement.
JOHN .H. NEWHARD.
