CETAL rAssAnn, or nnw'vonx, N. Y.

Application filed November 10, 1922. Serial No. 600,116.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cn'rAL PASSARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invent-ion provides an article which is susceptible of use for combing, drying, curling and waving the hair, and which may be heated in any preferred way, either electrically, by means of a flame or in any usual Other objects and advantages will be ap parent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodi ment of the invention it is to lee-understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without de arting from the nature of the invention.
eferring t0 the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a side view of a curling iron embodying the invention, the dotted lines showing the clamp member moved away from the shaft, whereby to admit of clamping the hair the-rebetween preliminary to curling,
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of li'i re 1, and
igure 1 is a detail perspective view of the outer end of the toothed clamp member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The article comprises a shaft 1 which constitutes the body and which is adapted to be heated in any preferred way, either by being held over a flame or by passing an electric current through a heat element, not shown, contained within the shaft. A handle 2 is provided at one end of the shaft 1 and in the event of the device being electrically heated, the lead wires 3 pass through the handle. The inner or lower portion of the shaft 1 is reduced circumferentially to produce a rib l which is disposed at one side of the shaft and extends substantially the entire length thereof. Offstanding ears 5 are provided adjacent the inner end of the shaft 1 and the clamp member 6 is pivoted thereto.
The clamp member 6 is half round in cross section and is adapted to embrace the lower half. of the shaft 1 below the rib 4 and its outer end is pointed to facilitate its passage through the hair. An arm 7 extends out- 'wardly from the inner end of the clamp member 6 and is pivoted between the ears 5, the outer end of the arm termina in in a push-er piece 8. A spring 9 is interp in be tween the rear end of the shaft 1 and the arm 7 and normally tends to press the arm '7 outwardly and hold the clamp member 6 in engagement with the shaft 1. The spring 9 is preferably of conical form to admit of its collapsing into a small space when the outer end of the arm 7 is pressed inwardly. Teeth 10 are disposed along one. side of the clamp member 6 and curve laterally towards the opposite side. The toothed side of the clamp member 6 obtains a snug fit beneath the rib t with the result that the outer side of the shaft 1 and clamp member 6 bordering upon the rib 1 are flush so that when the clamp member is closed against the shaft no projecting shoulder is presented.
The article thus produced may be used as a comb or for drying, curling or waving the hair in a manner well understood. By engaging the teeth 10 with the hair and rocking the device about the axis of the shaft 1, the hair may be roughened or flufi'ed and when required, the device may be used in substantially the same manner as an ordinary comb.
What is claimed is:
1. A curling iron comprising a shaft and a clamp member pivoted thereto, said clamp member having teeth along one side curving laterally towards the opposite side.
2. A curling iron comprising a shaft having a portion reduced to form a laterally disposed rib, and a clamp member pivoted to the shaft and adapted to embrace a portion thereof and obtain a close fit beneath the In testimony whereof I affix my signature said rib, whereby adjacent outer sides of the in presence of two Witnesses.
shaft and clamp member are flush, said METAL PAbSAhD' clamp member being provided along the side Witnesses:
adjacent the rib with teeth which curve lat- A. L. BACON,
erally towards the opposite side. H. I. BRETT.
