CHARLES I. BAKER, OF ORLAND, CALFORNIA.
PORTABLE SHELTER.
' Application filed February 6, 1922.v Serial No. 534,615.
To @ZZ fr0/10m` it may concern.'
Be it known that l, CHARLES l. BAKER, a citizen of the' United States of America, residing at Orland, in the county of Glenn and State of California, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Portable Shelters; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact, description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in portable shelters, having for an object to provide a combined shelter and bed espe eially desirable for use by campers, whereby they may erect a temporary shelter which will afford a bed or support and in addition thereto, ample space for dressing, cooking, eating or other purposes.
It is likewise an object of the invention to provide a shelter of the character mentioned which is of knock-down design, whereby to permit of packing or placing the same in a confined or limited space and by consequence, rendering the device especially advantageous for use by automobile tourists, whose equipment, in its essentialsy must be of such character as to occupy but minimum space 4during transportation.
Another object of the invention is to provide the device with a novel form of frame having portions thereof arranged to permit the ready constructing of a bed or lsimilar support. Y
@ther objects will be in part obvious and in )art pointed out hereinafter.
n order that the invention and its inode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, l have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following description based thereon, set out one possible embodiment of the same.
In these drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a portable shelter constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a view of the frame of such a shelter, the view being in perspective.
Figure 3 is an end view of the .shelterv showing the bed arrangement therefor.
Figure l is a plan View of the bed.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view of one end of the bed,'the view being partly in section and partlyv in elevation. c
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 but showing the central joints of the bed.
Figure 7 is a detail view of the joint arranged between three of the frame members.
Figure 8 is a view of the preferred form of mattress used herewith.
Figure 9 is a detail view showing one ot the buttons for securing the cover ot the shelter on its frame. i
ln the accompanying drawings it will Vbe seen that there is provided an upper longitudinal frame member l which is made in sections connected by a T-joint 5 and thatl extending downwardly from the ends and middle of this frame member are jointed supports 3, the joints of these supports being likewise connected by T-joints as at 5, or by a straight joint as at 5. Extending downward from the corner posts 3 are top end frame members 6 which are also made in sections, the sections being connected by ljoints 5 and at the lower ends of the members 6 are elbows Ll which are supported on jointed standards 3', the joints 5 of the slanting end members 6 being supported on similar standards 3 but of greater length. Extending between rear corners of the standards 3 is a rear bed frame member 12 and between the intermediate standards 3 is a similar bed frame member l2. rEhe end 'frame members 13 connect corner standards 3 with the intermediate standards' and also `thus connecting the members l2. These members l2 are jointed and are connected by T-joints 14 supported on legs 15.
L horizontally and longitudinally disposed section 8 is connected to certain of the vertical sections 3 through the medium of T-slip joint connections 5 and provides therebelow ample space for an entrance or doorway to the shelter.
Over the frame of the shelter or the supporting` structure, a fabric covering or envelope is placed, such as indicated in dotted lines by the numeral 9, said covering or envelope being provided with an inclined top and vertical front, rear and end walls, the front wall thereof, of course, being partly out away to correspond to that space occurring below the horizontal section 8 and the vertical. section 3 interconnected by the same for an obvious purpose. ln order that the envelope 9 may be secured to adjacent portions of the various sections of the supporting` frame, I may and preferably do arrange upon those portions of the frame section contacting with the envelope studs generally indicated by the numeral 10, which as will nambe noted, are adapted to be releasably engaged in eyelets 11 secured to the inner sides ot adjacent portions of such envelope. By this mode ot connection between the envelope and the same, it will be readily appreciated that undue movement therebetween will be prevented to a material extent, such for example, as with 'flapping of the fabric envelope against adjacent portions ot' the supporting frame during windy or stormy conditions. v
Within the supporting trame, arrange other longitudinaland transverse sections ot tubing or similar material indicated by the numerals 12 and 13, constituting thereby a horizontally arranged rectangular trame,
the longitudinal portions ot which are in sections and connected by T-slip joints 11i, similar to the joints whereby supporting legs 15 can be engaged in' their vertical porl tions tor etfectuallv suiiortine` the interigitudinally disposed slats 17 are provided mediate parts ot said longitudinal sections 13.
Over the rectangular 'trame constituted by thc sections 12 and 13, a heavy Jfabric envelope or cover 1G is arranged, having top, side and end walls of suitable design. Lonthe'rectangular trame and as will 'be noted, are formed in sections, the .adjacent ends ot which are connected by hinges 18, while hooked metal arms 19 are secured to the opposite end portions thereoit through 4the medium of bolts 20 or similar fastening devices and are adapted to have the curved or hooked ends 19 thereof snugly engaged over adjacent port-ions of the transverse sections 13. Thus, when a plurality ot these hinged sectional slats 1'7 are arranged in juxtaposed relation upon the rectangular trame, an ettectual bed or similar ,support will have been provided; the same lying directly over lthe top or' the heavy *fa-bric envelope 16 and by consequence, preventing a person lying or supported thereon from the inconveniencer ot dirt, dust, or the like.
A mattress 21 is preferably provided the `slats 17 and as will be noted, is'divided longitudinally as at Q2 in order that thel outer section theieoit may l e swung downwardly at those times when it is desired to use but a portion of the bed, as toi' example during vday time,`when it is ldesirable to secure all available space within the shelter. Upon such occasions, a number of the slats 17 may be removed from the rectangular frame,
leaving only the rearwardly disposed 'slats and by consequence, permitting' the outer section ot the mattress 21 to dropA down Wardly, thus affording what may be aptly termed as a lday bed.
Y It desirable, the hookedarms 19 may be formed oft spring metal, whereby to add toy the resiliency ot the hinged sectional slats 17. e
From the it'oregoing, it will be. understood Y knock down arrangement of the supporting trame structure, the various longitudinal,`
transverse and vertical sections thereof, with disassembly, may be compactly arranged' in a com paratiifely small bundle, which in turn, can be stored or placed in a' confined or limited space. Should the deviceebe used by automobile tourists, it is manifest, that thev same in its disassembled and compact form may be arranged upon the running board ot the automobile or in the luggage carrying compartment thereotl as may be desired.
Because ot the arrangementot thebed supporting means. within the frame, ample space is provided for its occupant or occupants to dress, cook, eat, et cetera; additional space being available by modifying the arrangement of the slats 17 together withv the mattress 21, as hereinbetore stated.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable ofY considerable modification and such modification as is ,within the scope ot my claims, l consider within the spirit ot my invention,
l claim: i
1. In combination, a main frame includ-` ing quadrilaterally disposed vertical members, horizontally disposed bedframe members connected to said vertically disposed members, a fabric cover stretched over .a pair of the horizontally disposed members and sla-ts having hooked ends engaging overV said pair of members and clamping the cover thereto.
2. In combination. a main frame includ! ing quadrilaterally disposed vert-ical members, horizontally disposed bed frame members connected 'to said vertically disposed members, a fabric cover stretched overa pair of the horizontally disposed members and slats having hookedl ends'engaging over said pair of members and clamping the coverY thereto, said 'slats having' hin son their lower sides at their central pm ions resting on said fabric cover whereby' the fabric cover assists in supporting said hinge joint.
ln witness whereotl l have hereunto set 'any hand. l 'Y CHARLES i. naman;
