PORTABLE scnenn GAHPL'NG Application filed flctuber 10, 1825; Ma! No. 51,750.
This invention relates to improvements in camp outfits particularly to a means for providing a combination table or counter, benches, and-bed, arranged in adjustable and foldable relationship with a side wall of the shelter.
A further object of this invention is to provide, in connection with a camp outfithaving screened side walls. a foldable device adapted to be adjustebly attached to a screened side wall in such a manner that when folded against the wall completely out of the way, the screened shelter tent may be used as a living room without obstruction. and when let down, the hinged legs will act to support the device in the form of a bed, or when a part is raised up and properly supported, a strong table and seat may be provided as desired.
Other objects will appear in the following description of the device and as disclosed in the two sheets of drawings herewith made a part of this application.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 represents a. perspective view of the portable screen camping outfit in assembled form showing the exterior thereof.
Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of a section of the interior of the camping outfit, disclosing the foldable device arranged in the form of a table and bench in its relation to a screened side wall.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a section of the interior of the camping outfit, showing the foldable device arranged in the form of a bed in its relation to a screened side wall.
Fig. 4 illustrates a perspective view of a section of the interior of a camping outfit showing the device in its foldable relationship with a screened side wall.
Fig. 5 represents a sectional. elevational view of a screened frame portion having attaehed thereto. the arms or briuheiypm'tions of the foldable device, a hinged leg section is also shown attached at the end ofthe detachable arm.
Fig. 6 represents a sectional plan view of a corner connection for the screened side walls showing a method of fastening together by means of using square headed bolts.
Numeral 1 designates a shelter consisting of ordinary tenting material or otherwise and having preferably, foldable portions as at 2, while 3 represents screened side walls having suitably framed portions 4 and 5 held together by angle sections 6, or fastened trogether in any other suitable manner. A relatively wide section of suitable-materiah preferably a board 7,. having a fiat surface is adapted to detachably connected along one of its longitudinal-edges to the screened frame work portions hby means of. hooks 8 having a shank portion 9 and fastened to the under longitudinal edge of the flat section of material 7, the hook portrimis being adapted to cooperate with an eye 10 screwed into the screened frame work portions 4. At suitable intervals along the opposite llongitudinal edge of the relatively widesection of material. 7 and underneath thereof, are located leg portions 1 1 suitably hinged as at 12.
At a proper distance below the eye 10in the screen frame work 4, arm or bracket portions 13 are adjustably and foldably mounted as at 14 by means of an angle 15 or any other suitable fastening device. The outer end of arm 13 is adapted to have foldably attached thereto, by means of hinge or otherwise, leg portions 16. Attached to the upper surfaces of the outer ends of arms 13 is a flat section 17 of suitable material, preferably of a narrower width than the flat section 7. The widths of the two flat sections 7 and 17 depend on the Width of the bed desired and the convenient arrangement of the bench and table or counter when the device is adjusted for dining'purposes or otherwise.
The corner sections of the screen frame Work may be connected by square headed bolts 18 as clearly disclosed in Figure This invention provides a camping outfit which can easily be made up in any size from 6 to 9' or as large as desired, tables of any lengths may be designed from the length of V the cot or bed to the entire length of a screen wall, for that matter, all four sides may be utilized for tables, seats and beds, the height of the usual screen wall is six feet and each screen in common practice is about 3 to 6.
By this invention. it is possible to swing a cot. table or bed. to the screen frame for two people if necessary, making it possible for from four to eight people having a place to sleep without using army cots or the like. The support for the usual tent covering, as in this case, consists in one ridge pole and two upright poles, one pole setting back into the tent three feet from the screen door, this pole ordinarily has hooks on it answerin for a hat, clothes or general utility rack, tie idea of one pole setting back being to allow the door to swing inward. The tables and seats of a large outfit when converted into a bed would he 26 wide that is for one person.
In operation, e teble counter and seat are attached to the screen frames in such amanner that they may be used as an eating counter or otherwise, and when not needec such, they may be :toli'led against the screen well entirely out of the way. l l hen 2t bed is desired, the seat may be let down and the counter or table is removed by liw upward iii l placing on the arms oi? the scat, thereby "forming a: bed when. the equipment, is not being used as a table, seat or heth it may remain hanging to the screen frame, thereby the screen tent may be utilized as a living room tree from mosquitoes, flies gnnts, sand flies and other insects. 'llhe original or common hirp'e camping outfit has a regular tent covering with all rour sides rolled up like curtains each "till having a canvas side that can be rolled up or let down (itwill, this, of course, makes both miner and win t-er tent. A convenient method :tor locking the canvas to screen trunies is by means ot ordinary screw eyes fastened to suitable portions of the screen fl'all'li) and adapted to pass through iron button holes in the canvas sections, tftl which the screw eyes are given. approximately one-half turn thereby efiectirely locking the screen and canvas portions together.
ll het I claim is:
ln an adjustable folding device suitable for :1 table, bed or bencln means for detechubly "ting the device to the side wall of at .he device comprising a multiplicity sistingg of two portions having ;.e and list surfaces, ineens along one longitudinal edge of one of the flat por tions for detachably connecting with the shelter well, supper-thug arms hinged to the opposite under side edge thereof, the other flat portion secured to the outer ends of supporthraclrets, the opposite ends of the brackets being detschebly connected with the shelter wellsupports suitably hinged to the outer ends of the supporting brackets, and positioned. underneath the last named flat portion. l n testimony whereof I ailix my sgnnture.
