ELIUS NIELSEN, OF VEJ'LE, DENMARK.
BED OR THE LIKE.
Application filed April 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I Ennis NIELSEN, subject of the King of'lDenmark, residing at Vejle, Vedelsgade 107, Denmark, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds or the like, of which the following in a specification.
The present invention relates to beds, divans and the like; and it resides in the provision of an improved article of furniture of the general character indicated hav ing side members which are constructed in the manner hereinafter described and which may be completely detachable from the bed frame or may be hinged thereto to be swung into horizontal position to form extensions, or, if preferred, may be rigidly secured to the frame.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a bed constructed in accordance with the invention, the sides of the bed being shown in raised, upright position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.-
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, show ing the sides moved into horizontal position. 7
Fig. at is a fragmental plan view of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a indicates the frame or body of the bed, which may be of any suitable construction and is preferably equipped with springs and upholstering or padding. Along both sides of this body are formed broad seams 7) (Figs. 1 and 3) which are designed to fit tightly against the corresponding movable sides.
The latter, which embody the most important features of the invention, may as previously stated be conmpletely removable from the bed, or they may be hinged or even rigidly fastened to the same according as preferred. In any instance, each side preferably consists of a rigid, elongated, threesided or U-shaped frame 0 which, in the construction illustrated, is connected to the adjacent side member of the bed frame or body a by hinges 65 or 6 so that it may be swung into and out of horizontal position in line with, and forming an extension of, the bed body. The fourth of each side is formed by a springy element 7 which may consist of a succession of connected springs or of'a chain having springs incorporated in it at intervals; such element, whatever its precise construction, providing a resilient support 1922. Serial No. 551,852.
which will yield when pressure is imposed upon it but will immediately return to horizontal position as soon as thepressure is relieved. The sides are covered with suitable material, as indicated at g, and may, if desired, be cushioned or padded internally, as
at h (Fig. 3) such covering 9 and cushion or padding yielding when downward pressure is imposed thereupon, but being returned to normal position immediately thereafter by the action of the spring element f, as will be understood.
Pivoted supports or braces 7', carried by the longitudinal rails of the frames 0 of the movable sides, may be employed to hold said sides in horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 3; and in addition to these braces, hooks or catches is may also be utilized to support said sides in such position, for which purpose they are adapted to engage suitable devices provided on pivoted extensions of the head and foot boards (or either of them) of the bed. The hooks may, moreover, engage coacting pins or other devices fastened so directly to the foot board (Fig. 2), to hold them in raised, upright position. But it will also be apparent that the sides may be nailed or otherwise rigidly attached to the body of the bed or divan, in which event as they will be permanently fixed in position, instead of being movable from one position to another.
It is to be understood that instead of manufacturing and selling the bed or the like as a single piece of furniture, the sides, constructed as above described, may be manufactured and sold separately, and may be detachably secured to sofas, divans or other pieces of furniture already owned by the purchasers, from which furniture they may be removed until the latter is ready to be used for sleeping purposes.
I claim as my invention 1. A bed or the like, comprising, in combination, a body or bottom provided with upholstering and with internal springs, said body having broad seams formed along both sides thereof; and a plurality of sides each composed of an elongated U-shaped frame, a single resilient element connecting the free ends of the arms of the U so as to close the open side of the frame, and a cover completely enclosing said frame and spring element and devoid of connection with the upholstering of the body, said cover adapted to yield when pressure is exerted against it of the U so as to close the open side of the frame, and a cover completely enclosing said frame and spring element and devoid of con-,
nection with "the 'iipholstering of the body,
said cover adapted to yield when pressure is exerted against it but automatically returned to normal position by the spring element immediately such pressure is removed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ELIUS NIELSEN.
