COIMBINED STREET SIGN ANDTRASH BECEPTAGLE.
Application filer! June 27, 1 9 21. Serial No. #30,?09.
HARRIS, .in at inary object is to provide a sanitary trash receptacle which is adapted to contain trash gathered from the streets, and ,which isalso provided with spaces for .advertising or in-- st-ruction signs.
A further object of the invention .resides in PI'OVldlllQ' a support for the receptacle, the arms of which are held in place by means of a single set screw.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing an improved-sign construction applied to the support for the trash receptacle.
A still further object resides in constructing the .base of thev trash receptacle in such a manner that water and other liquids may be readily drained therefrom and paper and other heavier material prevented from clogging the openings through which the water is adapted to vflow.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the ,novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as .Wlll .be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this appl.ication-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section as seen on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 with the trash receptacle removed;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the trash receptacle removed; and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the main sign in outspread position before it is applied to the holder.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 1 designates a base or support constructed of weighted material to retain its position against casual displacement, the same ha ing formed or otherwise projecting 'upwardly therefrom, a .post or the like 2. the base being provided cent illy with a s cket 3.
A pair of arms +1, are provided, the same having their outer ends bent upwardly as shown at 5, and their inner ends bent down wardly as shown at (5, the latter forming fingers or engaging ends for reception in the socket 3. "Elm arms 4 are disposed in diametrically opposite directions after .hav ing their ends centered in the socket 3,
thus forming a portion of a seat for the purpose to ,be hereinafter described. The arms 41 are preferably formed of wire and an additional .wire frame 7 of substantially rectangular design is provided, the base portions 8 of which have their inner ends bent downwardly to form fingers orthe like 9. which are also received in ,the socket 3. These base portions 8 of the frame, together with the arms at complete the formation of the seat desired. and the fingers 6 and 9 of the arms 4. and base portionslS, respectively, are secured in the socket 3 by means of a set screw 10 entering the side of the post 2,
as clearly shown. in Fig. .3 of the drawings.
The upper portion of the frame 7 is flared outwardly as shown at 11,and the wire constituting this frame is looped upon itself attheextreme upper endf-to .form a ring .or
thelike 12lmounted centrally of the upper portion. of the frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 ,of .the drawings.
'The upper portion of this frame '7 and the ring 12'constitute supports for advertis ing or direction signs, as may be desired. A metal plate 13 is provided, the same having a slot 14 centrally thereof, and this plate is adapted to be folded upon itself and applied to the upper portion of the frame 7, the slot 1 1 affording a means whereby the ring 12 may be passed therethrough. This plate 13 may be gripped to the wire consti-- tuting the frame and forms a main sign space for the device. Advertising data or street direction may be painted or otherwise inscribed on both sides of the plate. A double disk-like plate 15 is provided, the same being cut from a single sheet of metal, the two disks being connected by means of a neck or the like 16 and folded over the ring 12. Lugs or wings 17 are formed on the plate 15 to be engaged with the wire constituting the ring 12, and additional wings or lugs 18 formed thereon through the medium of which said plate may be bolted as at 19 to the main sign 18. Thus, two sign spaces are provided which are bolted to' getherand held in place on the frame; As
stated heretofore, the base portions 8 of the frame 7 and the arms 4 constitute a seat 7 adapted to receive a cylindricalreceptacle 20. The receptacle 20 is for trash gathered v drawings.
removed by raising the same-from itsseat,
(ill
in the streets and in order to hold the same in place the angular slotted lugs 21 are secured to the upper portion of the recepl tacle at diametrically opposite points thereon which receive therein the wire of the frame 7, as clearly shown in F 1 of the The receptacle may be readily the flared portion 11 permitting of the disengagement of the lugs with the wire, and of course the application of the receptacle to its seat is also a simple operation.
The receptacle is provided with an annular bead 22' in its base or bottom and at regular intervals therein triangular shaped openings 23 are provided to allow-water or other liquid to readily flow therefrom. These openings 23. are formed by punching outwardly the lugs or studs 24, and these triangular lugs are disposed upwardly at an angle so as to form guards against the clogging of the openings by paper or other material disposed within the receptacle.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device; the
operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects'of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform thevfunctions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in the form, proportion and in the mlnor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention; 7 y
1 ,avaoao It may be here stated that the arms'et and the base portions 8 of the frame 7, contiguous with the fingers 6 and '9, respectively,
are set in radial grooves 10, as shown clearly in Figure 3 of the drawings, and through this medium the seat forthe receptacle 1S held firmly in position for action by the set screw 10. c 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
'1. device of the character describedcomprising a pedestal, a substantially U shaped frame having the free ends ofthe arms thereof supported thereon, the crown portion of said U-shaped frame having a loop portion formed therein, a sign formed folded back upon itself'and supported on said crown portion of said frame so as to extend on'opposite sides of said frame, said folded portion being provided with an elongated slot whereby said loop portion may extend therethrough, and an auxiliary sign. supported on'opposite sides of said loop portion. v
2. A device of the character described .of a blank piece of metal adapted to be comprising. a pedestal, a substantially U v shaped frame having the free ends of the arms thereof supported thereon, the crown portion of said U-shaped frame having a loop portion formed therein, a sign formed of a blank piece of metal adapted to be folded back upon itself and supported on said crown portion of said frame so as to extend on opposltesides of said frame, sa d
