Description
Patented Got. 22, 1929 l il" STATES EA'UL RGSENBLOGM, 0F CI-IICdAGO, ILLINOIS FLANGING TOOL Application filed May 22, 1925, Serial This invention relates to a novel tool for forming flanges at or out of the edge of holes in metal plates, and is more particularly intended for forming such flanges upon tops of tanks or drums which have had a circular hole cut in them.
The essential object of this invention is the provision of a tool for the above purpose which is simple in construction, comparatively cheap in first cost, durable, proficient in use, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
it further object of this invention is the provision of a tool for the above purpose which may be readily assembled for operation with the ordinary drill press or the like.
ii further object oi this invention is the provision of a tool for the above purpose which will form a neat flange out of the edge of holes without in any way injuring the plate or receotacle in which said flange is formed.
A further object of this invention is the n'ovision oi rollers having vertical portions and inclined portions, and that will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, and eflicient and reliable in operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts of my device whereby the objects conton'ipl ted are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 1-- Figure l is a perspective view of the flanging tool embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the same on line 33 of Figure 2.
Throughout the drawings like reference characters indicate like parts.
The numeral 1 designates a circular disc shaped body having a shank S extending therefrom :tor the purpose of attaching said body to a drill press or the like in the well known and usual manner. A series of screw threaded openings 3 adapted to receive bolts No. 32,185. Renewed March 16, 1929.
4 carrying flanging rollers 5 adapted to form a flange out of the edge of a hole in the top of a tank or drum, are formed in the body 1. Said openings are positioned in the disc in a circumference of a circle lying interinediate the center of the disc and the outer edge thereoi Nuts 8 are threaded on the free ends of the bolts i for the purpose of securely holding said bolts on the disc in operative position.
The rollers 5 comprise an upper vertical portion 6 and a lower portion 7, said lower portion being in the form of a frustum of a cone, the larger diameter of which is contiguous to the upper vertical portion of said roller. By the use of a roller of this shape a very neat and exact flange is obtained, one that will be at right angles to the top of the tank or drum containing the hole, the edge of which is being flanged.
In operation the device is attached to a drill press or the like in the usual and well known manner. As the tool descends into the opening or hole the edge of which is to be flanged, the rollers 5 will bend down the 7 inner edge of said opening, the inclined por tions. '7 of course first acting on said or go, and when said portions 7 pass below the edge the vertical portions 6 act upon it, and bend it down to form a vertical flange at right so angles with the upper horizontal portion of the top of the tank or drum containing the hole being flanged.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical as embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself to exact details herein illustrated since, manifestly, the same can be varied considerably without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A flanging tool con'iprising a flat circular disc shaped body portion having a series of openings positioned in a circumference of a circle lying intermediate the center of the body portion and its outer edge, bolts positioned in said openings, smooth faced rollers mounted for rotation on said bolts, said rollers comprising an upper Vertical portion and a lower inclined portion, the outer edges of said vertical portions of said rollers extending to a point inwardly of the outer edge of said body portion, and a shank extending upwardly from the center of said g body portion for rotating said body portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my s1 nature.
SAUL ROSENBL OM.
