Description

C. BA RTL() W.
Gate-Latches. l
No.147,237. Patented'FebJonaM.
"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS BARTALOW, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14%',237, dated February 10, 1874; application led October 6, 1873.
To all whom it may'concer'n:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS BARTLow, of Richmond, county of Wayne, State 'oflndian a, have invented certain Improvements in Gate- Latches, of which the following is a specilication:
My invention relates'to an improvement in gate-latches, wherein I combine a double latch and spring in one piece, and operating in such Ia manner as to prevent the possibility of the gate being opened by cattle. Heretofore inside latches have been used in order to secure the gate against mischievous stock. My latch is placed upon the outside of the gate, and, while it is equally secure against stock, it is also much more convenient than an inside latch. The whole is an improvement on my latch patented December 31, 1872, and relates to a more simple, economical construction ofthe latch and spring, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a plan view of the casing A, showing the combined latches and spring P Pplaoed therein. Fig. 2 is a top view of the combined latch and spring. Fig. 3 'is a view of the adjustable plate B, which is fastened to the gatepost.
A is the casing, into which the combined latch and springs l? I are placed. B is an adjustable plate, which is fastened to the gate= post, and having the notches-S S, into which the latches I? P spring, and are held by the ac= tion of the springs formed of the latches themselves. D is a lug on the casing A, against which the latches spring when pressed together. N N are lugs cast with the easing A, around which the springlatches pass, and also upon which a covering to the latches is placed, the whole being secured upon the gate by means of screws passing through the holes M M M. The plate Bis adjustable upon the gate-post by means of screws passing through the slots O O.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-v v The double latch and spring formed of one piece, in combination with the casing A and plate B, or its equivalel'it, substantially as shown and described. CORNELIUS BARTLOV.
