ranmrme STAMP.
' Application filed August 15, 1921. Serial No. 493,016.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Marking Stamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices employed for printing characters of various sorts, as for dating, cancelling, or other purposes, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that shall be extremely durable and efficient in use.
One form of device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Figure 1 is a view in section through a marking'device embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a face view of a portion of my improved stamping band.
Figure 3 is a view in section through such portion of my improved stamping band.
Many of the stamping or marking devices in use prior to my invention have embodied endless bands of rubber or similar material having the characters integrally formed with said band, such endless bands being located as upon rollers 5-6 supported upon shafts 7-8 mounted in side parts 9 of a stamping frame comprising, in addition to the side parts, a housing 10 having a bandle 11 secured thereto in any suitable manner.
In the use of such endless bands of rubber or similar material, when a single character becomes injured or destroyed it is necessary to renew the whole band. Moreover, in extended use such band, owing to the inherent qualities of the rubber, becomes stretched to such an extent that it is useless. By the use of my improved band, when a single character becomes injured or destroyed for any reason such character may be readily renewed, and the band as constructed by me will not become stretched to any appreciable degree.
My improved band as shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a base constructed to receive a block composed of rubber or similar material upon which the characters to be stamped are formed, such base being composed of metal of any suitable character and having a flat resting surface 12 with knuckles 13 formed on opposite sides of the base and a socket 14: opening outwardly between the knuckles to receive a block 15 upon which characters 16 are formed in the ordinary mannen.
Links 17, in the form of oblong loops, are located, as to their sides, in knuckles 13, and these links may be formed of wire, but preferably I stamp them from sheet metal so that they are endless, and a requisite number of these bases are secured together by the links to form a band of the proper length. The blocks 15 hold the links in the sockets in the knuckles 13, and the sockets 14 may be open at either or both ends so that the blocks may he slid into such sockets by a movement lengthwise of the base.
While I have illustrated herein and hereinabove described the member on which the printing characters are formed as composed of rubber or similar material, such member being removably secured to the base, I contemplate as embodying my invention a structure in which the bases may be made with the printing characters formed directly thereon, the removable connections between the bases enabling any base to be removed and replaced by another base whenever the character thereon may become injured. Likewise the material on which the characters are formed may be of any suitable kind.
From the disclosure herein it will be seen that my improved band is practically indestructible and may be, with ordinary care, used indefinitely, and that when a character becomes injured or destroyed it is necessary only to renew the member upon which that character is formed.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I 100 desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means.
I claim 1. A stamping band base formed of rigid 105 material with knuckles on opposite sides at the lower part thereof opening from a socket extending into the base to receive a block bearing a stamping character thereon.
2. A stamping band base formed of rigid 110 material formed to provide knuckles on opposite sides at the lower part thereof opening from a socket extending into'the base, and a block located in said socket and containing a printing character.
3. An endless band consisting of bases formed'o'f rigid material and shaped toprovide a bottom, side walls and recesses in each of the side walls. to enlarge the space between the said side walls, and means for connecting the said blocks by engagement with the said recesses.
.4..An endless band consisting of bases formed of rigid material and shaped to provide a bottom, side walls and recesses at the edges of the bottom beneath said side walls to enlarge the space between the side-walls near the said bottom, and means for connectingthe said blocks by engagement with the said recesses.
5. base for an endless band; said base being formed of rigid material and shaped to proxride a bottom and side walls extending at right angles to said bottom, the said side walls bulging outwardly at their bases to provide recesses and enlarge the space between the said side walls at the lower part shaped to provide a channel between side walls thereon, thesaid channel being enlarged at each side to provide space'for the reception of a link thereinJ '7. A base for an endless band shaped to providea bottom. sidewalls thereon, a block located between said side walls,'and'spaces between said side walls and block to receive a linktherein. r
FRANK E. SMITH.
