HAND STAMP.

This invention relates to improvements in hand stamps and has as one of its objects to provide a hand stamp embodying a comparatively large number ot' bands bearing the letters of the alphabet, the digit numerals, and punctuation marks, and Capable ot adjustment so as to provide t'or the composition of one or several words or numbers, or combination vof words and numbers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hand stamp ot' the type referred to, so constructed that in a minimum space, a number of type bands of maximum length are arranged in connection with means tor adjusting the said bands.
rnother object of the invention is to provide a hand stamp of the type referred to, embodying novel means for suitably tensioning the type bands so as to maintain the same in the positions to which they are adjusted and likewise to insure of proper frictional contact ot the bands with the rotatable elements over which they are trained.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the hand stamp that it may be laid upon any surface without likelihood of the type bands coming in contact with the surtace to mar the same with ink.
Another object ot' the invention is to provide a hand stamp in which the component parts are extremely simple in construction and capable of being readily assembled and without the employment of extraneous fastening means for holding'the parts in their proper relative positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means vfor maintaining the type bands in parallel relation and properly spaced at their portions which are to be active.

The frame or casing of the stamp is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and the same is preferably stamped from a single integral sheet of metal. comprises a top 2, front and rear Walls 3, and end walls 4, the end Walls 4 being integrally joined at their upper ends, as at 5, to the ends of the top 2 and extending downwardly at right angles from the plane of the top, the marginal portions ot the front and rear walls 3 tting snugly against the liront and rear edges of the said end walls 4. It will be observed by reference to Figures 1 and 3 ot the dra-wings, that the end walls 4 are of gradually decreasing width in the direction of their lower ends and that consequently the iront and rear walls of the casing are located in downwardly converging planes. For a purpose to be presently explained, the lower portions of the walls 3 are formed to curve inwardly toward each other, as indicated by the numeral 6, and these portions ot the said walls 3 engage between the lower portions of the end walls 4, as clearly shown in Figures l, 2 and 4 ot' the drawings. A hand knob 7 is secured in any suitable manner to the top 2 of the casing, midway betweenV the ends thereof.

The end walls 4 of the casing are formed each with a pair of openings 11 located near the upper corners of the said walls, and, below these openings, each with an opening 12. Spindles 13 are itted at their ends in the openings 11 and one end of each spindle is circumferentially grooved, as indicated by the numeral 14, the groove being of a width equal substantially tothe thickness of the end wall of the casing and the spindles are assembled by fitting their ends in the openings 11 with the grooves in the ends of the spindles accommodating the lower portions of the walls ofthe openings into which these grooved ends are litted. In a like manner, a spindle 15 is tted at its ends in theopenings 12 andis provided at one end with a circumferential groove 16 The said casing engaging the upper side of the wall of the Vopening' in which the said end of the spindle is seated. The grooved ends of the spindles are held in engagement with the walls of the openings l1 and 12 by reason of the tensioning of the character bands as willpresently be made clear, and the openings 11 which accommodate the grooved ends of Vthe spindles 13 are located a distance higherV groove in the said spindle end, so that all t ofthe spindles are parallel.

The numeral 17 indicates a series of rollers freely rotatably mounted upon each of the spindles 13 and about which the typebands 8 are trained in the manner most clearly shown l lt will be understood, of course, that each band is trained about a respective pair of the rollers 17, and the rollers may be made of any ma terial found suitable for the purpose. From thetadj acent sides of the rollers 17, the type bands 8 are led downwardly and each about a respective one of a series of friction rollers 18 Vwhich are freely rotatably mounted upon the spindle 15, each roller 18 being provided at one end with a thin, circular, disc-like headl, and the opposite peripheral portions of these vheads being arranged to project through slots 2O which are formed in the front and rear walls 3 of the casing above the Vconcave portions 6 of the saidV walls. The peripheries of the heads are,
therefore, presented where they may be con veniently engaged to impart rotary motion to the respective friction rollers 18 and thus effect adjustment of the corresponding type bands 8.
From theouter sides of the rollers 17, the type bands are led downwardly andbeneath a type bar which is indicated by the numeral 2l. This type bar is formed from a Ysingle integral sheet metal blank and comprises a channeled body including a bottom member 22 and front and rear upstanding flanges 23,V
the blank being formed with more or less gradual bends between the bottom member 22 and thefflanges 23 so that the type bands 8 may pass about the under side of the type bar without yengaging any sharp edges. The ends of the bottom member 22 of the type Vbar are extended beyond the ends of the Y flanges 23 and are engaged in notches 24 formed fin the lower ends of the end vwalls 4 of the casing of the stamp and `these projecting end portions are bent up, as at 25, to
engage against the outer sides of the said end walls at their said lower ends, the walls being,y in this. manner, restrained against outward displacement. It will be observed that the stretches of the type bands which extend downwardly from the outer sides of the rollers 17, pass over the inner or op? traneous fastening means need be provided to hold these spindles against longitudinal displacement. Likewise, in view of the fact that the bands are tensioned, no means need,
be employed other than the projecting ends of the member 22 of the type bar to prevent displacement of said bar. order that the bands may be held against lateral displacement where they pass beneath the type bar and these' portions of the bands likewise' properly uniformly relatively spaced, the bottom member 22 of the type Vbar is preferably stamped or otherwise acted .upon to provide a series of spaced spacing ribs 2G which are shallow and project from the under side of the said bottom member 22 and extend between the longitudinal edges thereof or for a portion of the width of the said member of the bar, as maybe desired.
From the foregoing description of the invention it willV be seen that the hand stamp embodying the invention is extremely simple in construction and consists of parts which may be readily assembled. It will also be evident that due to the provision of the rollers 17 and the location of these rollers with respect to the friction rollers 18, type bands of maximum length may be arranged within a very small space. It will also be observed that the portion of the band which passes about each roller 18v has its character-bearing face or side in contact with the said roller and due to the irregular character oi' this side of the band because of the configuration of theraised'characters thereon, the
said portions of the band will more firmly grip the peripheries of the rollers. It will likewise be evident that due to the fact that the type bands are thinner at the relatively adjacent ends of the raised character p0rtions of the bands, and the character portions are of a length equal substantially to ly eiiicient tensioning means for the said bands.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A hand stamp comprising a casing having front, roar, and end walls, a type bar extending between the lower portions of the end walls, spindles extending between the upper portions of the end walls, rollers rotatably mounted upon the spindles, a spindle extending between the end walls below and in a plane between the iirst mentioned spindles, friction rollers rotatably mounted upon the lastmentioned spindle, a head fixed with relation to each of the said friction rollers, the front and rear walls of the casing having slots, the heads having portions ot' their peripheries projecting through the slots, and type bands trained over corresponding ones of the tirst mentioned rollers and beneath the corresponding friction rollers and beneath the type bar, the said :tront and rear walls ot the casing having inwardly curved portions engaging the stretches of the type bands which extend between the irst mentioned rollers and the type bar whereby to flex said stretches and tension said bands.
2. A hand stamp comprising a casing having front, rear, and end walls, a type bar extending between the lower ends of the end walls, rollers mounted within the upper p0rtion of the easing, rollers mounted within the casing beneath the first mentioned rollers and above the type bar, manually operable means associated with each of the last mentioned rollers whereby the same may be rotated, and type bands trained about corresponding ones of the said first and second vmentioned rollers and beneath the said type bar, the front and rear walls of the said casing having inwardly curved portions the convex sides of which engage the stretches of the type bands above the type bar to tension said bands.
