WIrNESEEE. INVENTEJR. fl/./ QM f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YOUNG F. \VRIGHT, OF JAMESTOW'N, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,217, dated February 3, 1874; application filed July 28, 1873.
- iently fed into the box, and to allow the trampersbody and head to project above the top of the box, so that he can tramp the last part of the material as well as the first, as will be more fully set forth hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
1 represents the frame of an ordinary cot-' ton-press, havin g the follower operated by the screw 2, in the usual manner. This follower is composed of two sections, the center block 3 of which is swiveled to the lower end of the screw, so that it can be readily turned in either direction, as shown by dotted lines. Over the projecting flanges, formed on each side of this block, is slipped the follower 4, which has a groove formed on its top to receive the lower end of the block, and which can be readily slipped on and off at will.
By removing the follower and turning the block at right angles to the box 5, there is left ample room to throw the hay, cotton, or other material to be baled into the box, and to allow the tramper s head and body to project above the top of the box, so that he can tramp the last part of the material as well as the first.
As heretofore made, the follower has been made in one solid piece-the size of the inside of the box-and which is an obstruction both to the filling in of the material and to tramping it down, preparatory to pressing it into a bale.
' The center block and follower may be secured together in the manner here shown, or in any other that may be preferred.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A follower for presses made in two parts, one of which is removable, substantially asshown and described.
2. The center block 3, swiveled to the end 4 of the screw, in combination with the grooved follower, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto a fiix my signature this 2d day of July, 1873.
