To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. MARX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to baling presses, and it has for its object to produce a very simple, effective and easily operable press for pressing waste paper and the like and forming such material into bales which may be conveniently handled.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the structure of the press box, and to provide holding means for retaining within the press box a strip of gulrlap when it shall be desired to cover the A further object of the invention is to produce a press box having a top frame on which the head block and follower 'ill be movably supported to enable the same to be moved out of the way to produce an opening for feeding material into the press box.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved construction and arrangement of parts whereby the head block and follower will be retained securely in position during the operation of pressing the bale.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred. form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarilymade to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifica-,
tions within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

The improved press box comprises in its construction sills 15 supporting the subfloor 16 on which the flooring strips 17 are mounted, said flooring strips being spaced apart to produce between them the grooves or recesses 18 for the passage of the tying Wires. Rising from the sub-floor are the side walls 19 and the back wall 20, the side walls being provided at their lower and upper ends with cross bars 21, 22 which are connected together by Vertical rods or bolts 23. The cross bars 21, 22 at one side of the box are extended to form brackets 24 for the passage of a hinge rod 25 on which the door 26 is hinged, said door being provided with cross bars 27 that extend at one end for the passage of the hinge rod 25 and at the other end to form brackets 28 supporting an angle iron 29 which, when the door is closed, engages the ends of the cross bars 21, 22, thereby preventing spreading of the sides and materially reinforcing the construction of the press. The door is provided at its free end with latch members 30 connected together by a rod or link 31 so as to operate in'unison to engage the catch members 32 which are secured upon and project beyond one side wall of the box. While a plurality of latch members and catches may be used, thus enabling the door to be very firmly secured, the fact that'the latch members are connected together by a link enables them to be simultaneously operated with one hand.
Securely mounted on the side walls of the press box at the upper end thereof is a top frame F comprising a front bar 3% and side bars 35, the latter extending some distance beyond the back wall of the box. The side bars 35 support the head block 36 on which is mounted a nut or internally threaded sleeve 37 for the passage of a screw 38 having at its upper end a hand wheel 39, said screw carrying at its lower end the follower 40 with which it is connected by a swivel 'oint 41. The parts are so proportioned that when the screw is retracted or moved upward to the limit of its movement, the follower will be positioned between the side members and the front member of the frame F, thus enabling the head block and follower to be slid or moved rearwardly on the side members 35, thus leaving the top of the press box unobstructed and enabling material to be conveniently fed therein. The cross bar-s22 at the top of the side walls 19 are equipped with lugs or castings 42 with which clips or yokes 43 are pivotally connected, said yokes being adapted to engage the ends of the head block when the latter is moved forward so as to dispose the follower in registry with the press box. The lugs or castings 42 have lips or flanges 42 that extend beneath the bars 22 and engage the same so as to resist the intense upward strain when the press is in operation. The head block will thus be securely connected with the body of the press, and thus, when the screw is rotated to move the follower in a downward direction, the contents of the press will be subjected to heavy pressure.
The follower is provided in its under face with transverse grooves 44 corresponding with the grooves 18 in the bottom of the press box for the passage of the tying wires.
The frame F which supports the slidable head block and the follower may be readily mounted or installed, and it does not necessitate anyspecial construction of press box.
The flooring strips 17 are made of such dimensions as to project beneath and for wardly of the lower edge of the door 26, thereby preventing the ends of the grooves 18 from being obstructed.
The floor of the press box is provided adjacent to the door 26 and to the back wall 20 with grooves 45 for the reception of retaining rods 46, insertible through openings 47 in one of the side walls, these rods being for the purpose of retaining in position a strip of burlap, indicated at 48, the upper edges of said strip being folded, respectively, over the top edge of the door and the top edge of the back wall member 20, the ends of the strip being terminally secured by means of clamp members consisting of angle strips or angle bars 49 which may be secured by means of bolts and thumb nuts 50, 51 in any convenient way.
Under the, modified construction illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, there is substituted for the back wall member 20 a door designated by 26', said door being constructed in every respect like the door 26 and mounted in the same manner. This second door will be regarded as constituting the back wall of the press box when the press is in operation, but after the completion of the bale it will sometimes facilitate the re moval of the finished bale.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The construction of the press box is extremely simple and of such a nature as to enable it to be produced at a very moderate expense, thus providing a press which may be readily installed in business houses where a considerable quantity of waste paper and other material accumulates, enabling such material, instead of being an annoyance and a source of danger from fire, to be converted. into an actual source of revenue. The improved press occupies but little space and ma be installed on less floor space than would usually be devoted to the rubbish heap. It is simple, convenient and thoroughly efficient for the purposes for which it is rovided.
aving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a baling press of the class described, a press box having a sub-floor and flooring strips secured thereon, said flooring strips being provided with transverse grooves, retaining rods engaging said grooves, side wall members having apertures for the passage of the retaining rods, a back wall member, a hingedly supported door, a top frame supported on the side wall members and comprising a front bar spaced from the upper edge of the door and side bars, the upper edge of the back wall being unobstructed, securing clamps on the door and on the back wall member, a head block sunported loosely on the top frame, means for securing the head block in fixed relation to the press box, a screw in threaded engagement with the head block, and a follower carried by the screw and having swivel connection therewith.
2. In a baling press, a press box, a movably supported cross head having a screw threaded therethrough and a follower swiveled on the lower end of the screw, external frame members at the top of the press box, lugs secured on said frame members and having flanges extending beneath the same to resist upward tension, and yokes pivoted on the lugs to engage the head block.
