J. G. HAUGH,
BALING PRESS.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 11. 191i.
Patented Beta. 18, 1917.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. HAUGH, F TIFIFIN', OHIO,
BALING-ZVPRYESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
Application filed June 11, 1917. Serial No. 174,011.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES G. HAUGH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Tifiin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses, and do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to baling presses adapted more particularly for baling paper, and the object of my invention is to provide a construction at once exceedingly simple and strong and easy and convenient of ma- -nipulati0n of the parts requiring to be moved for placing the material to be baled in the press, and removing the bale there from, and to this end my invention consists in the baling press constructed substantially I as hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:- Figure 1 1s a perspective vlew ofa paper 7 baler with the parts arranged for the recepfront 11 has a short distance above its botton a cross cleat 12 which provides in effect, a flange 13 at the bottom of the front, which when the front is in position, enters a groove or channel 14 in the upper side of the box bottom, and thereby the front is securely held in position and yet its removal and replacement are easily and quickly done. At the top, said front has a cross cleat 15 which when the front is in place, lies between and flush with the projecting ends of cleats 16 on the sides of the press box 10 at the top thereof, and on the ends of said side cleats respectively are turn-buttons 17 which are adapted to overlap the adjacent outer surfaces of the front cleat 15, and thereby secure the front 11 at the top. Said front 11 just below its top cleat has on each side an angle iron 0r strap 18 which overlies the adjacent outer surface of the box side, and
thus helps to support the latter against outward pressure.
The follower 19 is caused to exert the desired pressure by means of a vertical screw 20 which passes through a nut at the trans-' verse center of a cross bar 21 that rests at its opposite ends upon the top of the sides of the press box and above said cross bar has a handle 22 for revolving it. To support said cross bar against upward thrust or pressure,'it has at each end a metal strap 23- which consists of a vertical member and two horizontal members, the upper horizontal member being extended over the top of the cross bar and bolted thereto, and the lower horizontal member being projected beneath I the box-side cleat 16, and having a sliding engagement therewith so that the cross bar may be shifted between its central position at the top of the box and a position at the back thereof. The connection between the feed screw and the follower is a loose or detachable one, so that when it is desired to place material in the box to be baled, the follower may be removed and the screw supporting cross bar slid back to the rear of the press box entirely out of the way.
' Having described my invention what I claim is A baling press comprising a press box having an open end, afollower, means having a loose connection with the follower for applying pressure to the latter, a bar supporting the means for applying pressure to the follower crossing the open end of the box and resting upon the sides thereof, a cleat on each of said sides, and a strap at each end of said bar, secured at one end thereto, and extending across said cleat and projecting under the ledge thereof, and slid able along the cleat with said bar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES o. HAUGH.
