UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OIJIVIER F. DUBOIS, OF TURTLE LAKE, IVISGONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. BUNKER, OF SAME PLACE.
HAY-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,146, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed December 23, 1889. Serial No. 334,663. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, QLIVIER F. DUBOIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Turtle Lake, in the county of Barron and State of lVisconsimhave invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Hay-Presses andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hay-press. thereof with the baling chamber in use. Fig. 3 is a rear end view thereof; and Fig. 4 is a detailed, partly broken away, view of a modification of the mechanism for actuating the follower.
This invention relates to certain improvements in presses designed more especially for baling hay; and it consists of the novel combination and construction of parts, as will fully appear from the following description and accompanying illustrations.
In accordance with my invention, I employ a suitable horizontally-disposed receptacle or chamber A, within which hay is placed for compression and formation into a bale. The baling-chamber proper A of the receptacle A has in opposite sides longitudinal slots at a, through which to pass the binding wire or rope. In the top of this chamber A is an upwardly-opening door B, hinged at one end, as at b, to a frame of the receptacle A, the said door having secured to its upper side at the outer or free end a cross-bar b, projecting beyond the side edges of said door and provided with hooks c, engaging eyes or staples c 011 the end uprights cl at that end of the receptacle A. At a suitable distance from the door B, I may provide the receptacle A with asecond door (not shown) to permit feeding the hay thereinto by two or more persons at different points and at the same time. In the outer end of the baling-chamber A is placed a removable end piece or board f, fitting the same snugly, its bottom edge resting in a shallow groove or gain gin the bottom Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section or floor of said chamber, while its upper or top edge is received in a shallow groove or gain g in the under side of the door B, which, together with the groove or gain g, prevents displacing the gate by the pressure of the contents.
0 is a drum which stands vertical and has an axial bearing in the bottom and top of the receptacle A.
D is the follower, which fits closely the receptacle or chamber A to effect the compression of the hay or contents of the latter, and which has its exteriorstem orbarD connected, preferably by a rope or chain D with the Windlass or drum 0, in order to actuate said follower.
E is a guide-bar secured by a pendant E to the receptacle A, and having a ledge or rabbet E extending in the direction of its length and having the follower-bar D resting and guided thereon. This guide-bar, together with an overhanging bracket E fastened to the guide-bar at its inner end and receiving in a groove h in its under side the upper longitudinal edge of the follower-bar, serves to keep said bar in a right line.
G is a sweep or pole connected to the upper end of the Windlass 0. By means of this sweep motion is imparted to the Windlass to operate the follower, said pole or sweep in practice being adapted to permit hitching a horse thereto or applying to it other power.
It will be seen that the horizontal receptacle, with its extension guide-bar, is within the diameter of the circle described by the movement of the sweep, thus providing a compact arrangement of the parts and economizing space.
In the modification, as disclosed in Fig. 4, the follower-bar D is provided with teeth 0 on one edge, with which is caused to engage a pinion O on a vertical shaft suitably journaled in the press-box frame, said followerbar resting upon a suitably-supported roller B and held in engagement with the pinion C by a roll F, also suitably supported in position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a baling-press, the combination of the receptacle or chamber provided with a removable end, the follower, the Windlass or drum, a rope or chain, the follower bar or stem, and the guide-bar having a ledge or rabbet and a bracket overhangin said ledge or rabbet and having a groove in its under side directly above said ledge or rahbet, said follower being" guided in a right line by said ledge or rabbet and bracket and said follower-bar eon- 1o nected by said rope or chain to said Windlass or drum, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I ai'lix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
