BALING-PBESS.
Application filed February 15, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLIFFORD A. FLEM- ING, BURTON S. FLEMING, and CHARLES F. LADWIG, citizens of the United States, residing at Huntsville, in the county of Bandolph and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bailing-Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates broadly to improvements in baling presses, and more particularly to the means for feeding the unbaled material into the baling chamber.
Heretofore, for this purpose, a rigid plunger has been provided, together with means for forcing said plunger inwardly into the baling chamber in order to force a quantity of material, in advance of said plunger, into said chamber. It has been found, however, that in case too much of such material is disposed in advance of the plunger, as often occurs, the same is either wedged very tightly within the inlet end of the baling chamber, or is entirely prevented from entering such chamber. This is very undesirable since it not only causes unnecessary friction and therefore requires greater power to operate the press, but because of the fact that certain parts of the machine are often broken by the sudden stoppage of the plunger.
It is to overcome this most undesirable feature of the present day baling press, that we have devised our invention which is to be hereinafter fully described and claimed and which is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:-
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal-section through the receiving chamber and a portion of the baling chamber of a baling press,
showing a contractible plunger with which the machine is provided, in side elevation and in its normal condition;
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1 but showing the plunger in longitudinal section, this view likewise illustrating the condition of the plunger when an overload of material is being projected thereby, the aforesaid Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented llieb. 6, ilglltt Serial No. 8,420.
figures likewise disclosing respectively, the normal and operative positions of a gate member with which the inlet of the baling press is equipped;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section as seen along the plane indicated by the line 38 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse section taken along the plane of the line 4L-l of Fig. 1.
In these drawings, constituting a part of the application, C designates the receiving chamber of a baling press which is provided with any preferred type of hopper H at its upper end, into which the material to be baled is fed and rammed by the usual vertically moving head (not shown). Coinmunicating by a throat T, with one side of the receiving chamber 0, is a baling chamber BC which may be of any preferred type and which is here shown as extending horizontally from said one side of the chamber C, while extending from the oppo site side thereof, is a plurality of tracks or rails It upon which guide rollers with which the plunger P is equipped, are adapted to travel.
As this plunger is reciprocated by any preferred means, not shown, and as it forces the unbaled hay or straw into the baling chamber, it becomes expedient to provide means whereby, should an excessive amount of such material be positioned in advance of the plunger P and thereby forced toward the baling chamber, such an excessive amount will be prevented from wedging between the upper side of the plunger and the upper side of the throat T. For accomplishing this result, we provide means whereby said throat 1 may expand, under such circum stances, and likewise so construct the plunger as to allow it to contract.
In the present embodiment, the upper side of the throat T is shown as equipped with a horizontally extending transverse gate member or bar 1 whose upper edge is pivotally supported at 2 and equipped with an upstanding ear 3 to which one end of a coil spring a is connected, said spring extending toward the baling chamber and being secured to the upper wall thereof, whereby to exert its tension to normally retain the gate member 1 in upright position, in which position, its lower edge constitutes the upperside of'the'throat T as will be'evident by an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will be evident however, that this gate member can yield inwardly into the baling chamber to the position seen in Fig. 2, thereby allowing the size of the neck to be increased and more readily allowing the charge of unbaled material to be forced into said chamber. Tliisis one means of preventing wedgvplates 5 are provided with rollers 8 which travel upon guide rails R, previously described and with a, pair of upstanding ears 9 to which a substantiallyhorizontal deck 10 is pivoted at its rear end, said deck constituting the upper side of the plunger and having its forward end extended downwardly as seen at ll toform an apron in advanceof the upright end plate 12 which connec'ts the front edges of the plates 5. Completing the construction of the plunger, is a coil spring 13 which is disposed between the deck 10 and a'stop flange lat which projects rearwardly from the plate 12, and an upright bolt 15 which depends from said deck through the spring and through the flange V 14: and whose lower end is provided with a stop 16 for limiting the upward movement of the deck 10. In the present case, a pair of links L are shown as pivoted to the axle upon which the rollers 8 are mounted, these links being reciprocated by any. preferred means. 7
.By constructing. the plunger P in the lgmanner just described, it will be seen that the deck 10 may yield downwardly under thus preventing the plunger froln being the undesirable conditions before set forth,
checked in its forward movement, preventing it from wedging 1n the-balmg chamber,
and allowing lighter power to be provided 'pensed with.
for operating the machine. Although this plunger P ispreferably employed in connection with'the gate member 1 previously described, it will be evident that it could well be employed were such gate member dis- From the ings, it will be evident that very simple means have been provided for accomplishing the object of the invention, yet that a foregoing description, taken in 1 connection with the accompanymgdrawmachine constructed in the manner described and illustrated, wlll be very efficient 1n operation and W111 possess a-number of advantageous features.
