IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.

v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,184, dated October 26, 1875 application filed July 17, 1875.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that we, THOMAS G. W. Mo- MEEKIN and WILLIAM W. HUNT, of Cedartown, in the county of Polk-and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton-Presses; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had 'to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The figure of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of our cotton-press.

Our invention relates to cotton-presses; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the devices for operating the follower, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A represents the press-frame, in the upper portion of which the bale-box B is formed. O is the follower, pressing upward in the bale-box'B, and has two levers, D D, loosely hinged to its under side, one near each end. These levers are at their upper ends as wide as the follower, but are cut out so as to cross each other, and at their upper end they are formed with tenons a a, which enter slots in the follower, thereby preventing any lateral or side motion of the levers. The lower end of each lever D rests in a recess formed in the upper side of a wedge, E, which rests upon an incline, plane, G, as shown. The inclined planes G G are supported on the lower cross-bars of the frame A, and their upper ends are out out to overlap and pass each other, so that the one will be supported by the other. The wedges E E are provided with screws I I, extending through cross-bars H on the sides of the frame A. 011 each screw is placed. a nut, J, provided with spokes b b for turning,.and these nuts bear against the cross-bars H, as shown.

When the requisite amount of cotton has been placed in the bale-box, the nuts J are turned by means of their spokes 12, thereby drawing the wedges E upward on the inclined planes G. This movement of the wedges straightens the levers D, forcing the follower O upward to press the bale.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the follower O, levers D D, recessed wedges E E, and inclined planes G G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the levers D, wedges E, and inclined planes G, of the screws I, cross bars H, and nuts J, with spokes b, all substantially as and for the purpose set'forth.
