Description

Patented March11.,1873.

C'.- C. H U WAR D. Cotton-Presses. No. 136,725.
UNITED STATES! PATENT CEEIGE.
OHARTEROAMPBELL HOWARD, OF LOWNDESBOROUGH, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESNSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,725, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CHARTER C. HOWARD,
of Lownd esborough,in the county of Lowndes and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. l The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a press for pressing cotton, hay, or other' articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In lorder to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a horizontal section of my press.
A represents the frame-work, at one end of Which is the bale-box B. The press lies on the side and the movement of the various movable parts is horizontally. O represents the follower with rod or bar D, said bar passing between two rollers, a a., to keep the same in line and yet not increase the friction to any perceptible degree. On each side of the bar D is secured a toothed bar, b, into which the levers are to work to force the follower inward into the box to press the material in the same. E E represent the levers, or, rather, one set of the levers, for operating the press. These levers are on their inner ends provided with metal caps cl having a projecting tooth or cross-bar, e, to en gage with the toothed bars b. On the upper side of each cap d are two or more notches or grooves, t', to form bearings in which the stirrups or bails G G are to be placed. These stirrups or bails are hinged or pivoted to the press-frame A, one on each side of the bar D, and the lever E placed in said stirrups in the manner shown, the tooth e engaging with the toothed bar b when the power is applied andthe follower moved inward. A
spring -pawl, f, engages with each of the toothed bars b to hold the follower at the point to which ithas been moved at each movement of the levers E E.
It will readily be seen that the stirrups G G form'adjustable-in fact, self-adjustable-fulcrums for the levers to work in, and that the said stirrup-fulcrums are between the power and the weight.
As the follower has been forced into the bale-box a certain distance the levers E E will perhaps become insufficient to 'finish the pressing of the bale, and in this case I employ other levers, H H, constructed substantially in the same manner as the levers E E. The. teethv of these levers H H engage with toothed bars or plates h attached to the extreme end of the Aframe A and the levers passed through staples or other equivalent devices on the end of the bar D. The levers H H move in the opposite direction from that of the levers E E, and in this case the Weight is between the fulcrum and the power.'l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy l.. In combination with the follower-rod or bar D, the toothed bars h h and the levers H H operating on the end of the follower-bar, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the frame A wit'i bale-box B, follower C, bar Dwith toothed bars` l, rollers a a, stirrups Gr, pawls f, toothed bars h, and levers E H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and forthe purpose; herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as lmy own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARTER CAMPBELL HOWARD.
Witnesses JNO. B. FULLER, O. R. BLUE.
