BOILER INSTALLATION.
To all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. DIESGHER, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citi- 6 zen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Installations, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in supporting boilers consisting of oneor more horizontally arranged upper and lower drums connected by a plurality of vertical tubes.
It is the usual practice to support the boiler on the setting consisting of brick Work and a binding or bracing frame of steel. This setting becomes very highly heated and the expansion due to such high temperature will cause a shifting of the binding frame in respect to the brick work. There appears to be a greater-expansion of the steel work forming the binding than is the case with the brick work, and when the binding serves as the support of the boiler then there is a disturbance of the whole structure, and the binding and the steel work comprising the boiler proper takes a changed relationship with the brick work causing cracks and air leaks in said brick work.
The invention described herein has for its object the provision of means which will not be subjected to high or varying temperatures, for so supporting the boiler ele ments above recited, that the setting may move under the influence of temperatures to which it is subjected without any way afieoting the boiler, and the elements thereof may expand or contract without injury to the setting. The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a boiler installation embodying the improvement claimed herein; Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively front and side elevations of the same; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of aportion of the installation; Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view, the plane of section 50 being indicated by the line VV, Fig. 3;

known in the art, but it is preferred that they should be so built up from structural material, i. e., plates, angles, etc, that they will be angular in cross-section, so as to fit around and brace the corners of the enclosing walls or setting of the boiler, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, these columns are tied together and braced by angularly arranged members 2 and horizontally disposed channels or beams 3, thereby forming a rigid rectangular frame, the members of which are preferably outside of but may bear against the enclosing walls so as to prevent any outward displacement of such.
walls, and should present relatively smooth surfaces inside so as to allow the free movement of the brick work respective to the steel work due to expansive effects.
The upper drum or drums 4c extend as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and l, beyond the outer faces of the setting and the portions so projecting beyond the setting rest in saddles 5 carried by the girders 6, which are supported by the pillars 7. These pillars rest on suitable foundations and are outside of and in no way connected to the frame, which is formed in part by the corner columns 1 as hereinbefore described. In order to hold the boiler in proper relation horizontally to the frame and the setting enclosed thereby, provision is made whereby the ends of the girders may engage the frame without interfering with the relative vertical movements of the frame and setting. In the construction shown herein, the columns 1 are provided with guiding members 8 adapted to slidably engage complementary members 9 on the girders 6.
In the construction shown herein the columns consist as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of plates 10 and 11 of a length substantially equal to the height of the setting and secured at right angles to each other, by angle pieces 12. Adjacent to the upper ends of the columns, the plates as 10, are formed with extensions 10 which project substantial distances beyond the column proper and to these extensions are secured the guiding members 8, preferably channel shape in cross-section, as clearly shown. The comple- .mentary member 9 on the girders may be channel shape and should not fit so tightly within the member-8, as toprevent relative movements of the girders and columns.
In order to allow of the movement of the setting independentof the drums 4, the ends of which project through and beyond the setting, metal rings 13 formed in sectionsand having internal diameters substantially greater than the external diameters of the drums are placed around the latter and suitable yielding packings as asbestos, mineral wool, etc., are arranged between the drums and rings which are carried by plates 15 extending across the setting and secured to the corner posts as shown in Fig. 3.
As the setting including the brick work and the binding frame are rectangular, and
the members of the metal frame forming the binding are not imbedded 1-11 or in any way connectedto the brick work, the latter can be formed of whole brick, thus avoiding the waste and delay in erection incident to fitting thebricks around the members of the binding. 7
I claim herein as my invention:
1. A boiler installation having incombi nation a boiler having upper and lower :drums and connecting tubes, a metal frame surrounding the boiler and forming part of the boiler setting, pillars, girders supported by the pillars and forming supports for the upper drums and means intermediate the girders and frame permitting independent vertical movements of said parts'and tying corner columns and bracing members ex tending between the columns and fornling' .parts of the boiler setting, guiding. means secured tothe columns, girders, supported by the pillars and having their ends in movable engagement with the guiding means on the columns and a boiler consisting of upper and lower drums and connecting tubes, the upper element'of the boiler being supported by the girders.

frame forming a portion of the boiler setting, means for supporting the drum independent of the frame, and means for connecting the drum-supporting means and the frame so that the latter will serve as a brace to prevent the lateral movement of the drum and its supporting means by'permitting uniform movements of said parts due to changes 7 of temperatures.
