To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Gnonen T. LADD, re-
siding at Pittsburgh, in the county of Alle-l gheny and Stateof Pennsylvania, a citizen or the United States, have invented or d1slcovered certain new and useful Improve@v ments in Boiler-bettings, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The Vinvention described herein relates to certain improvements in settings for boilers of the water tube type having upper and llower drums,-v and has for. its object a con` struction wherein the boiler is supported by a metal frame wholly independent of the inclosng brick walls-which however areirmly braced externally by the metal frame The invention is hereinafter more fully 1 described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view partly in section showing my improved setting; Fig. 2 is a ,side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, the plane .of section being indicated by the lines .IIL-III Fig. 1 ;r Fig. 4 is a view partly ,top
plan and partly in section; Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating a modification of the manner of supporting the upper drum.; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line -VI-VI Fi-g. 5; Fig. 7 is a sectional View illustrating a ,modification in the support for the front wall of the setting; Fig.
8 is an enlargeddetail view of one of the supporting columns, Fig. 9 shows enlarged plan and section of the supporting fingers; Fig. 10 is a sectional Qdetail showing the cushioning of the ends of alower drum in one or" the side walls.
In the practice of my invention, columns or posts 1 are provided preferablyhaving one side, as a, channel shaped, either rolled or built upr, and a sideV at right angles' to the y' first, formed by a -plate b riveted to one of the angles of the channel shape., The nven .45
tion however is not `limited to any particu-4 lar construction of saidA columns which however have two sides at an 4angle to eachother so asl to inclose the'.angles formed bythe back and side walls of the setting. In order that the channel members of the columns at the Irear .corners of'the setting may bear firmly against the side .walls of the setting, theplate members b of the columns are tied to ether, the connecting part or parts exten ing between the columns across the'back Wall of the setting. Whenit is not necessary to protect or armor this back wall,-
the columns may be tied together by rods engaging at their respective ends angular clips 3 riveted to the rear side walls or plates 'b 'of the columns.l To the yupperendsof these columns are secured ends of horizontal girders 4 of any suitable construction and extending forward to the front corners 'of the portion of the setting forming the heating chamber, which incluses the boiler. vThe lfront ends of these girders are -riveted to the upper ends of lvertical supports and the up- Pel orjrolled. The lower portions of these supports 5 formvthe outer faces' or armor of the side walls of the irechamber of the setting as shown in Fig. 2. These outer faces, which laterally support the brick work of the side walls of the fire-chamber, are formed ofmetal platesreinforced by vertically arranged angles '6 riveted to the plates'.
4./lsshownin Fig. 2 the side armor of the lire-chamber and the g vertical extensions 5 thereof are tied to the channel portions af of the columns 1 by any suitable means y' known. in the art. As for example when it is not deemed desirable or necessary to protect or armor the side walls of the'heatingv chamber of the setting, the fire chamber and the extensions 5 thereof may be tied tothe columns 1 by rods 7 arranged at suitable intervals .below the girder 4. The vertical supports 5 are connected at their upper ends by an angle bar 8, and at an intermediate point by a channel 9 as shown in Fig. 1. The front wall of the lire-chamber 'is protected andv laterallyl supported by a metal plate 10 which lmay be ,portions 5 of said supports are prefe'rably channel shapes which may be built up e5 the side armor of formed in sections and isreinforced by av series of angle bars' 11 extending horizon` tally across the plate and riveted thereto as mor are riveted. t'o one side of angles 6' reinforcing the side chamber.-
As clearly. edges of the girders 4 are cut away to form concave recesses for the reception of the upshown in Fig. 1. The sides'of this` front arplating orarmorofthe Iire-v f shown lin- Fig. l2, the upper I per drum 12 to whichthe upper ends of the l 'tubes 13 are connected, the lower ends of the latter being in turnconected t'o the lower drum 14 as is the usual practice. The sad# dlesjl vin which the drum rests are formed by metal pieces secured to the girderalong the ledgesof the concave recesses.
Cil
It will be observed that the girders -L ieri-ning the immediate support for the 'upper drum and through the latter for the entire boiler structure, are included and form a part of a rigid metal structure which sur` rounds and braces but does not engage or interlock with the brick work as will hereinafter appear. 1t will. be understood that although the improvement is described and shown in connection with a two drum boiler', e., one upper and one lower drum, that by merely increasing the dimensions of the parts of the metal frame and providing additional saddles on the girders, the improvements can be used with any desired size of boiler, requiring a plurality of' upper drums.
The walls forming the fire-chamber and the heating chamber in which the boiler is suspended, as described, are made double, the exterior portion 16 being 'formed of' ordinary brick and the interior portion '17 of re brick, where required. The inner and outer sections of' the walls are closely in contact for their entire extent but are not bonded together in any way, so that each can move independent of the other according to their different expansions. It will be seen especially in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, that while the parts of the metal frame will bear firmly against the outer wall, that no portion of the frame projects into said walls or otherwise engages them, and hence the movement of the frame or the wall, which has a different rate of expansions than the iframe, will not tend to rupture the Wall, and thereby form cracks through which air might enter.. y
The fire-chamber may, according to its din'ieusions, be divided into sections, two or more, by suitable-partitions 18. The firee'r-harnber or sections thereof are closed on top by one or more arches 19, the inner ends of which are i'iush with the inner surface of the front wall of the heating chamber'. As these arches have not sufficient strength to support the front wall of the setting and are subjected to high temperatures and are thereby rapidly weakened, provision is made for supporti ng the front wall of the heating chamber independent of these arches. To this end a girder 2O formed of oppositely facing channel bars, is arranged across and immediately above the arches 19 the ends of saidv girder projecting through openings in the vertical supporting members 5, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and By arranging the channel bars with 'their flanges projecting inwardly as shown in Fig. 3, a boX- like open-ended girder 2() is formed, and by forming openings 21 through the web of the outer channel, air will circulate through Ythe girder and prevent its becoming unduly .heated` and thereby weakened. rlhis girder is n'iade of sul.. i ynt width to support' the outer portion 1G the front wall of the setting. -The inner portion 17 of the wall is supported bv a series of' inwardly projecting fingers 22 secured to the girder. lingers may be attached to the girder by any suitable means, a convenient construction for that purpose consists of bolts 23 passing through the fingers and blocks 21 inside the girder as shown in F ig. 3. ln order to permit of the removal of a finger and the insertion of a new one, openings r: a little larger' than the heads of the bolts 23am formed through the fingers and slots al extending from these openings longitudinally of the lingers as shown in Fig: 9. lt is prcferred that the lingers should be recessed as at c adjacent to the slots for the reception of the heads of the bolts. When replacing a finger, the Workman can reach through a hole 2l in the front wall of the girder 20 and loosen the nuts on the'bolts 23'suficiently to permit the linger being shifted longitudinally until the head of the bolt -is in line with the opening c, whereupon inner ends of the arch 19, the fingers may be secured to the under-side of the girder as shown in Fig. 7 in which case the latter will be protected by the inner fire brick wall 17 resting on the fingers.
As shown in Figs. and 6 the upper drum may be so supported as to `be wholly within the girders 4, by securing lugs 25 on the ends of the drum, said lugs being adapted to rest on the girders. rlhese lugs may be formed by bending an angleA or in any other suitable manner and riveting it to the ends, of' the drum, in which case the lugs would. rest in saddles on the girder as hereinbefore described.
As shown in Fig. 1 the inner and outer portions of the side Walls of' the heating chamber do not extend to the drum and lower edges of the girders respectively, but are stopped short sufficient distances to per mit of the expansive movements of the wall without effecting the metal frame or drum. The spaces thus left for expansion are filled with asbestos as shown at 25, which will yield as the wall moves. I
As shown in Fig. 10 the ends of the lower drum project into recesses formedl in the side walls of the heating chamber. These recesses are made suiiiciently larger than the. drum and the spaces t us provided are filled with yielding materia as asbestos 27, thus providing for the independent movements of, the drum and side walls.
It is characteristic of my improved setting including heating andl fire chambers lVhile the said drum so supported by the gir-ders that 'a portion of the drum Will project above the girder, walls arranged Within but independent of the vertical and horizontal members, vwhereby said Walls and members may move independent of each other With changes of temperature.
