- ERNST Gr.` HELANDER, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES CAST IRON PIPE FOUNDRY COMPANY, 0F BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY, A
CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
. 'maanma rammen. 1
y Application filed June 18, 19%2. erial Re. 568,702.
.i To all whom 'it covwem:
Bel it known that I, ERNST G. HELANDER,
a citizen ofthe United States of America and resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Annealing Furnaces, of which the following is a true and exact description,l
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to annealing furnaces such as are used in annealing iron pipes cast in metal molds. In such furnaces it is desirable that the pipes shouldbe re` volved while being annealed and supporting rollers are used which are liable to become so cooled as to calry away too much heat from the pipes supported upon them and then prevent the proper annealing of the pipes. The object of my invention is to provide means for supporting the rollers which will prevent the undue cooling of the rollers and my invention consists in the construction of the furnace and of roller supporting and enclosing boxes insertable in the bottom of the furnace which is illustrated in the drawing in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the furnace on line 1--1 of Fig. 2. Figure 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
` lFigure 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of I'F1g. 1. v
A is the furnace having an opening A* for the insertion of the pipes, outlets B for the escape of furnace gases and inlets C for the gas and air. D is a door closing opening A1. E and E1 are transversely extending openings or chambers 40 formed through and below the bottom of the furnace and preferably extending through its side walls as shown at E". E, E4 and E5 are shaft chambers extending below the bottom of the furnace and through its rear wall. The chambers Ea and E are covered as indicated at E". F, F, are iron boxes having water cooled side walls F8 in which are formed bearings F2, F2, etc. for the roller shaft K. F1 indicates the water jackets for cooling the side walls. G indicates a heat insulating wall built over the inner walls and bottom of the boxes F and furnace. M, M, etc., are worm wheels attached to the ends of shafts K and driven by a worm M1 on shaft M2 to which shaft is attached gear Ms driven by a pinion Mft on the shaft M5 of a motor M6.
In operation the water jackets F1 which are necessary to keep the bearings F2 sufficiently cool tend to draw heat from the shafts K and supporting rollers L and tend also to cool the insides' of the boxes F in which the greater portions of the rollers L are at all times enclosed and which form pockets into which the hot gases of the furnace do not penetrate. By lining the inside of the boxes with a non-conducting wall 'G I prevent the undue cooling of the inside of the boxes and of the rollers L and maintain the rollers at a suiiciently high temperature to prevent them from so cooling the portions of the pipes with which they contact to such an extent as will interfere with proper annealing. When it is desired Y to remove the boxes F for repairs, the rollers L are detached from shafts K and the shafts drawn out of their 4bearings in the boxes F and, of course, out of the hubs of rollers L. The boxes can then be easily removed and re laced.
aving now described my invention, Vwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an annealing furnace for pipes hav ing transverse chambers extending through and below the furnace bottom in combination with open topped boxes situated in said chambers having water cooled shaft bearings in their side walls and non-conducting linings on the inside of their water cooled walls, shafts extending through the boxes and supported on their water cooled bearings and pipe supporting and rotating rollers secured to the shafts between the box walls.

HELANDER.
