UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLTAM D. WOODRUFF, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING-BOXES.
Slpecilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,086, dated February 2,1874 application led September 13, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM fl). Wool)- RUFF, of Louisville, in the count)v of letterson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Knock-Down Packing-Box, ot' which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a plan View of a portion of a box constructed according to my impro ve1nent.
lfig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of Fig. l on the line x m, and Fig. 3 is a top View ot' one of the sides and the bottom of the box.
A represents the bottoni, which has cleats B fastened upon theupper side alon the edges, and projecting at the ends D. C is the top ot' the box, which has similar cleats E on the under side along the edges, and projecting at the ends F. G represents thel side pieces, which extend beyond the ends 'of the top and bottom boards as far as cleats D and E do, and thejr have a cleat, ll, extending across the inside at each en d. I represents the end boa-rds, which haveacleat, J, at thelower end, extending across the inside. K represents binding-cleats for the top, to be used for fastening the box together.
To set up the box, the bottom is laid at the ends on the cleats J of the end pieces, which are set upright 5 the side pieces B are then laid at their lower edges on the bottom A, between the edges of the end pieces and cleats B. Theil, after fitting the box, the top is laid on between the upper projecting ends of the end boards l', with its cleats E outside of and conning'the upper edges ofthe side boards; then the cleats K are put on between the upper ends of the end pieces and the upper side of the top (l, and fastened by screws L screwed obliquely into the end pieces.
To take it apart after unpacking it, the screws L are taken out, after which all the parts can be readily separated and packed awa)Y in a small pile.
rlhe method of sealing the box consists in insert-ing a wire staple, M, through holes prepared in the upper end of one or both of the end pieces of the box and the cleat, and securing a lead, wax, or other seal, N, on the projecting ends of the wire.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe combination ot' the top and bottom boards G A, having cleats D E projecting at the ends, the end boards I, having a cleat, J, at the lower ends, and the binding-cleats K, substantially as specified.
