VEHICLE winnow AND Queen.
I Application filed December 26, 1922.. Serial No, 609,035
g 7 To allwhomit Mag concern: I
.Be itknown that I, WALTER RosLUN :a
subject of the Government of Denmark, re
siding zit-Cleveland, in the county of Cuya' I 'hoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle l/Vindows and Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to windows, and
e especially to windows for vehicles of vari ous kinds, such as motor busses, street cars and the like, and haslfor its object toprovide an improved guard in connection with a window pane or sash, the arrangement being such that when the window is opened .the guard will be raised in position to prevent thearms or heads of passengers from h 7 being extended outside of the window.
I am aware that guards have been provided with sliding windows, but as a rule they are separate structures placed for example outside ofthe window. By meansof the present inventionthe pane and guard are secured together and they'are lifted and dow, the guard sliding in the same grooves as the pane, and supporting the latter in its various positions.
In the accompanying drawings 1 is a side elevation of a motor bus provided 330 with the improvement. Fig. 2. is an en-,
larged side elevation of the guard. Fig. 3 I
is a vertical section onthe line 3.8 of Fig.
1. Fig; 4: is an upper edge view of the.
85 guard. Fig. 5 is a seetion on of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, bars or. stiles of awindow casing in avehicle in which the window is used, this cas the line 55 slidingsash which includes a pane of glass 6 which may be used without a frame, the.
edges of the glass sliding in a' groovez8 in pack ng 9 set in a groove 10 lneach stile.
ing 7 in the groove and then to'cement the' lower edge of the pane in thepacking, so
that a water tight joint is produced. The
grating is of substantially the same thicl c' dropped together to open or close the win- 11 indicates the side" ing being grooved as usual to receive the The lower edge of the glass rests in 1a groove 5 extending along the upper edge of v the top bar of the guard or grating 12, the lower edge ofthe pane being fi ed in-the whichis formed at the top of the grating,
and which" contains the groove 5, being cut off at the ends, as indicated at 13* so that the ends of this head will abut againstthe strips or ribs which define the "groove 10 in z the stiles. Thishead may also be provided with ears 19 for the attachment of anysuit able sash holding device for holding the sash at the. desired elevation. I
The window casing construction is of that type 111 which the pane may be raised into a casing above the window'opening andthe grating may be loweredv into a casing below the window opening, the outerwall of said casingbeing indicated at 16 and provided l at the top with a ledge 15*along whichextendsa packing strip :14 against which the outside of the head 13 closes when. the sash is" lowered, as shown at Fig. 3.
,l/Vith asash so constructed the pane and gratin are fixed toge't-her and are raised or lowere together. When raised, the grating will rise from the well below .tocover the,
window opening, the panel'sliding into the casing above, and when the sash is lowered the grating; will descend into the well until the head 13 rests on the packing strip 1 L giving a close and water tight joint at the bottom of the window. n v The device will be foundvery convenient "and useful under all" conditions where a guard is needed for the purpose indicated, V i
and the structure is neat in appearance. 1 Iclaimz, ff
'1. In a window,-a pane, anda guard secured to the lower edge of the pane, said
pane and guard being slidable together up and down,'the upper edge of the guard being provided with a groove in which the lower edge of: the pane fits.
- 1ng,of'a sliding pane therein, and-a guard secured'to the "lower edge ofthepane slid-' able therewith, the guard being substanti allythe same width and thickness as the, pane, the guard having a head at its upper edge with a groove in which the pane is held. i
"3. .Thecombination a win dow cas j 2. The combination; with a window cas ing, of a sliding pane therein, and a guard secured to the lower edge of the pane slidable therewith, the guard being substantially l the saxne Width and thickness as the pane, the guard having a, head at its upper edge With a groove in which the pane is held, the
head being of less lengththan the Width 5 of the guard and having an outstanding shoulder whichcloses' against the window ledge when the guard 'is lowered.
Intestimony whereof, I affiz imy signature I in presene oftWo Witnesses.
