GRAIN-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Jan. 2,191
Application filed August 7, 1911. Serial No. 642,616.
Be it known that I, MnLYiN S. GREELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Grain-Door, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grain doors, and particularly to grain doorsadapted for use 011 box cars.
The object of this invention is to produce a door of this character which can be conveniently and readily arranged in operative position or removed therefrom.
This invention embodies a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, and is embodied principally in a plurality of door sections arranged to-set one on the other in the doorway and be removed therefrom to slide along the side of the wall when brought to a raised position, as will be evident from the hereinafter description.
This invention is illustrated in the accom- .panying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate smnlar parts, and
in which Figure 1 is an exterior elevation of a side wall of a car embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an interior elevation thereof Fig". 3 is a vertical section taken through the doorway, being on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in detail taken through one side of the door frame, with parts broken away.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 designates the side wall of a box car or the like having the usual doorway 7. A sliding door 8 is mounted on the dove-tail shaped tracks 9 at the top and bottom of the wall 6 to slide over the doorway and away therefrom. The tracks 9 are preferably spaced slightly from the sides of the car to prevent sleet and snow from collecting thereon, and the door 8 is provided with a latch 10 for locking same when closed. -This sliding door 8 forms an outer door for a doorway which is used in connection with the inner or grain door, as will be hereinafter de scribed. l
The doorposts 26 on each side of thedoorway each has an inner rabbet 25 and to these posts 26 are secured the innerj'linings 11 at the sides of the doorway, which linings extend from the floor upwardto a position below the top of the doorway. The strips 12 are secured to the edges of the linings 11 and project beyond the edges thereof to form a channel 30 between each of the strips 12 and the corresponding rabbet of the door post at each side of the doorway. The upper ends of the strips 12 are deflected inwardly or ofi'set as indicated at 12, the upper ext-remities being secured to the wall of'the car above the doorway. A. track 18 is se-' cured to the inner side of the wall 6 at each side of the doorway above the linings 111, each of the said tracks comprising a channel of dovetailed shape. These tracks 1% are preferably declined slightly fronr the doorway and the inner extremities thereof pass in under the portions 12 of the strips 12 to the edges of the doorway. At the top of the doorway and on the inner side thereof are secured a pair of angular members 16 having one of the flanges thereof spaced inwardly from the side wall of the car and projecting upward to form a track. The inner extremities of the said members are spaced apart and the outer extremities thereof extend in under the deflected portions 12 of the guide strips 12. I
Thegrain door sections are designated at 13, eachhaving a hooked member 14 secured centrally of the upper end thereof, a dovetailed rib 21 extending horizontally across the front side thereof, and a lip 15 secured to the lower edge thereof on the inner face. These door sections 13 are arranged to set one on the other in thedoorway with the extremities thereof extending into the'channel formed between the rabbets 25 of the door posts 2d and the guide strips 12. "The lips 15 of the upper sections overlap the upper edges of the lower sections to close the crevice between the sections, and the lip 15 of the lower section overlaps the foot board at the bottom of thedoorway.,
The upper sections are also provided with recesses 24: on the lower edge thereof into which the'hooks 14 of the lower sections project when the sections are upon each other. The lowermost section of the grain door is provided with a small door 19 hinged thereto to swing outwardly and bei'ng adapted to be locked against being opened by the latch QO'mounted on the said section and the member 22 carriedby the said door 19. This door 19 being-on the lower section can readily be opened when desired to let the grain escape from the car therethrough.
.In use, the door sections 13 are removed from the doorway by raising same to the -top of the doorway which permits the hooks enter the channel tracks 18 allowing the sections to be slid along the inner wall of the car. It will be noted that upon being slid to either side, the hooks 14 and the ribs 21 simultaneously engage the respective tracks 16 and 18 which prevent the said sections from being removed from the car, the hooks 1 1 engaging the tracks 16 guide the door sections until they are safely held in position by the tracks 18. To bring the door sect-ions in operative position the same are moved toward the doorway, the hooks lthereof sliding over the tracks 16 until the said hooks come between the inner ends of the tracks 16 when the door section can be lowered into the doorway between the guideways and the sides thereof. In this manner the respective door sections can be readily brought in operative position in the doorway and be removed therefrom. \Vhen the grain door sections are in operative position and after the car has been filled with grain, the outer door 8 is closed which forms an additional closure for the doorway. The tracks 18 being declined from the doorway prevents the door sections from sliding therefrom due to the jolting action to which the car is susceptible and retains the door sections thereon until manually slid therefrom to be brought in position in the door- Way.
It will be understood that this grain door can be built from lumber, sheet steel or other material and that the same is susceptible of alteration in its details within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a wall having a doorway therein and guide-Ways at the sides of the door-way, of a track secured to the side wall at-each side of the doorway, apair of tracks secured at the top of the door-way having their inner extremities spaced from each other, a plurality of door sections adapted to set one on the other in the said doorway between the guide-ways, a hook secured to each door section adapted to pass between the extremities of the tracks at the top of the door-way and engage the said tracks upon the door sections being slid to one side, and a track engaging member carried by each door section and adapted to engage the tracks at the sides of the doorway upon the door sections being slid sidewardly.
2. The combination with a wall having a doorway therein, and guide strips secured at the sides of the doorway having upper deflected portions, of a pair of tracks secured to the said wall at each side of the doorway having their inner extremities arranged within the said deflected portions of the guide strips, a pair of tracks secured at the top of the doorway having their inner extremities spaced troni each other and having their outer extremities nojecting in under the said deflected portions of the strips, a plurality of door-sections adapted to setone on the other in the said door fay between the guideways, a hook secured to each door section adapted to pass between the extremities of the tracks at the top of the doorway and engage the said tracks upon the door section being slid to one side, and a track engaging member carried by each door sect-ion adapted to engage the tracks at the sides of the doorway upon the door section being slid sidewardly, for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MELVIY S. GREELEY.
