Be it known thatl, CLIFTON D. Pn'r'ris, a citizen of the United` States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brake shoes, but more particularly to that type which is provided with a substantially pan-shaped shell of tough ductile metal to reinforce the cast body thereof. The primary object `of the invention is to provide a simple and economical brake' shoe construction possessing greater strength and durability than devices ofa similar nature heretofore known.

The many other objects and advantages of my inventionwill be better understood by reference to the following specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating selected embodinients thereof, in which:-

Fig. 10 is an enlarged transverse section on the line 10-10 of Fig. 7.

Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 6, the brake shoe comprises a panor shell` having a reinforc ing back 16 of ductile metal attached thereto and a body 17 cast thereon. The key lug 18 is formed. by bending upwardly the cen-' tral portion of the back 16.

The reinforcing back 16 is provided with a series of bent down lugs which are adapted to be inserted in corresponding slots 26 in the top wall of the pan or shell 15. End lugs 27 are formed on the opposite ends of the back 16 by bending upwardly and then downwardly the metal of the back. Prongs ZS'are formed on the extreme end of the back and these are inserted in the corresponding slots 29 in the top rof the pan when the parts are assembled. A pair of guide lugs 30 are formed on the back adj acent each of the end lugs 27 striking up flanges from the metal of the back and then folding the upper portion of these flanges outwardly and downwardly upon the upper face of the back in the manner indicated in Fig. 4. Aligned key openings 31 are formed in the lug 18.

`The pan, `in the present embodiment, is provided with a solid top having reticulated metal end and side walls, ybut it `will be ap` preciated thatthis pan may be constructed partially or entirely ofexpanded metal, wire fabric or other suitable material.

The reinforcing back 16 is attached to the pan 15 by inserting the lugs on the back into the corresponding slots in the pan and bending the lugs to tightly lock these parts together.

In Figs. 7 to`10 inclusive, of the drawings is shown a modified form of the invention in which a separate key lug is secured to the back instead of being formed integral therewith. The back 40 is attached to the pan or shell 41 by inserting the downwardly turned

42 and 43 in corresponding slots 46 in the top of the pan and then bending these lugs upwardly against the under face of the pan in the manner previously de` scribed.

The key lug 44 is initially formed as indicated in Fig. 9 with the attaching inem-y bers 45 bent downwardly. These members are inserted in corresponding slots 47 provided for the purpose in the pan 41 subsequent to the attachment ofthe back to the pan and prior to the casting of the shoe. The lower portion of the members 45 are then bent inwardly and upwardly against the under face of the pan in the manner illustrated in Fig. 10. The key lug 4-4 thus forms anadditional binding connection between the pan and -the back.

I ain aware that various changes may be made in the .form and arrangements of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention7 and I reserve the right to make all such as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing iii Shell, a back plate attached to said shell on the outer face thereof, a key lug on said back plate, and a body cast on said shell.

2. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing shell having reticulated side Walls, a back plate attached to VSaid shell on the outer face thereof, a key lug attached to said plate, and a body cast on said shell.

3. A brake shoe comprising a pan Shaped reinforcing shell having reticulated Side and end walls, a back plate, means for attaching said plate upon the outer Ytace of said shell,` and a body cast on said shell.

el. A brake Shoe comprising a reinforcing shell, a back plate attached to the outer tace of said Shell by means of lugsl formed on said plate, and a body cast on said shell.

o. A brake `shoe comprising a slotted shell, a back plate attached to the top Wall of Said shell by means of lugs on said plate projecting through corresponding slots 1n said shell, a key lug attached to :3a-id plateand said shell, and a body cast on said shell.

G. A brake shoe comprising a shell having a slotted top Wall, a key lug provided with attaching members projecting through the slots in said Wall to form an interlocking engagement between said shell and said lug, and a body cast on said shell.

7. A brake shoe comprising a pan shaped Shell having a Slotted top Wall and reticulated side and end Walls, a key lug provided with attaching members projecting through the slots in said top Wall and bent beneath said top Wall to Secure said lug on said shell, and a body cast on said shell.

8. A brake Shoe comprising a pan shaped shell of ductile metal having a slotted top Wall and reticulated Side and end walls, a back plate upon the outer tace of said top Wall, a key lug provided with attaching members projecting through Slotsy in said top Wall and bent beneath said top Wall to secure said lug and said plate to said Shell, and a body cast on said shell.

9. A brake shoe comprising a panshaped shell having a Slotted top Wall and licraminou side and end Walls, a back `plate secured upon the outer face of said top wall, a key luglprovided with attaching members projecting through the slots in Said top Wall and bent beneath said top Wall and said plate t secure said lug to said shell and said plate and form a supplemental attachment between said plate and said shell, and a body cast on said shell.

l0. A brake shoe comprising a shell, a reinforcing back plate secured upon said shell, end lugs formed on said plate, a key lug on said plate, and a body cast on said shell.

l1. A brake shoe comprising a shell, a reinforcing back plate secured upon said shell, end and guide lugs bent up from said plate, a key lug attached to said shell, and a Wearing body cast on said shell.
